TTC revises service, February 15

During the past few months, the TTC has dramatically increased service along most bus and streetcar routes as part of its ongoing strategy to “grow” ridership.

Unfortunately, this time, with the service changes that come into effect on Sunday, February 15, the TTC will be slightly decreasing service on many routes due to a lack of trained operators and buses. The failure of diesel - electric hybrid buses has had a major role to play in forcing the TTC to temporarily decrease its services. The decrease will likely continue until the TTC buys and receives new buses.

(this post uses transit advocate Steve Munro’s data on the number of vehicles operating along each route. You can read Steve’s comments on the latest TTC service changes here.)

Since Monday, February 16 is Family Day, a statutory holiday in Ontario, many of these changes do not affect service until Tuesday, February 17.

The changes affect these routes: 12 Kingston Rd; 16 McCowan; 17 Birchmount; 22 Coxwell; 25 Don Mills; 29 Dufferin; 32 Eglinton West; 34 Eglinton East; 36 Finch West; 37 Islington; 39 Finch East; 41 Keele; 45 Kipling; 46 Martin Grove; 47 Lansdowne; 50 Burnhamthorpe; 52 Lawrence West; 54 Lawrence East; 58 Malton; 60 Steeles West; 61 Avenue Rd North; 62 Mortimer; 63 Ossington; 64 Main; 68 Warden; 70 O’Connor; 72 Pape; 75 Sherbourne; 79 Scarlett Rd; 85 Sheppard East; 86 Scarborough; 87 Cosburn; 88 South Leaside; 89 Weston; 95 York Mills; 96 Wilson; 102 Markham Rd; 105 Dufferin North; 106 York University; 108 Downsview; 111 East Mall; 116 Morningside; 131 Nugget; 133 Neilson; 134 Progress; 161 Rogers Rd; 168 Symington; 171 Mt Dennis; 190 Scarborough Centre Rocket; 196 York University Rocket.

Specifically, the TTC is: introducing a new branch of a current route; canceling branches of current routes; increasing service along current routes; decreasing service along current routes; and adjusting the schedules of current routes.

Introducing a new branch of a current route

96 Wilson

Starting Sunday, February 15, the TTC operates buses on a new 96D branch of the route along Westmore Drive between Carrier Drive and Finch Avenue West on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from about noon until 10 p.m. The TTC is introducing this new branch to help passengers travel to a place of worship on Westmore Drive.

Eastbound buses start their trips at the cul-de-sac at the end of Carrier Drive, north of Albion Road, then proceed along the regular 96A branch to Carrier Drive and Humber College Boulevard, then proceed:

eastward along Carrier;
southward along Westmore Drive; and then
westward along Finch Avenue West to Humber College Boulevard,
resuming the regular 96A branch southward along Humber College.

Westbound buses reverse this routing.

Buses operate every 24 minutes along this new branch. While buses serve stops along Westmore Drive, they no longer operate on the 96A branch along Humber College Boulevard between Carrier Drive and Finch Avenue West.

Also, starting Tuesday, February 17, the TTC operates an earlier Monday-to-Friday eastbound bus along the route. The bus leaves Finch Avenue West and Humberline Drive at 5:40 a.m. Mondays to Fridays.

Canceling branches of current routes

165 Weston Rd North
