Dundas East / River track repairs: TTC buses replace streetcars, starting November 17

Starting 2 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, TTC track crews repair sections of rail

  • on the Dundas Street East bridge over the Don River east of River Street.

The TTC is replacing streetcars with buses along this route, while crews repair the tracks:

The buses operate between Dundas West and Broadview stations, replacing the current detour around the track-replacement project at Dundas Street West / College Street. It’s detouring the buses off the regular route between Dundas West Station and Lansdowne Avenue / Dundas West.

Buses continue to replace the cars until November 20, when the streetcars resume the previous detour path.

Starting 2 a.m. Tuesday, the crew sets up a work zone on the Don River bridge to replace three rail expansion joints.

The crews work only in the track area to:

  • saw-cutting, starting 7 a.m. each day;
  • excavating and breaking the concrete to expose the old rail, starting 8 a.m. and continuing to 10 p.m. each day;
  • replacing the expansion joints; and
  • placing new concrete.

Crews usually work until 11 p.m., but, as the TTC explains, “rail work of this nature requires periods of around-the-clock work to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

While the crews replace the old joints with new joints, they’re also cutting, grinding and welding the rail.

At the end of the project, they set the concrete to “cure” for 24 hours. They remove the work zone so that traffic can flow over all lanes of the roadway by 4 a.m. November 20.

The work zone restricts traffic lanes on Dundas Street East to just one lane in each direction. It may also prevent motorists from turning left. However, access to the northbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway remains available. “Paid duty” Toronto Police Service officers will direct traffic. Cyclists and motorists must share single lanes in each direction near the work zone.

505 Dundas

From 2 a.m. Tuesday, November 17 until 4 a.m. Friday, November 20, buses operate along the route, instead of streetcars.

eastward along Bloor West; and then
southward along Lansdowne Avenue to Dundas Street West,
resuming their regular route eastward along Dundas West.
