St. Clair Avenue West track repairs: TTC detours, starting September 28

The TTC is advising passengers that, starting 11 p.m. Monday, September 28, its crews are repairing the streetcar tracks and concrete

  • on St. Clair Avenue West between Vaughan Road and Bathurst Street.

The transit agency explains that, “These essential repairs are part of TTC’s preventative maintenance program to ensure safe and reliable streetcar operations.”

Buses replace streetcars along these routes, while crews work in the streetcar right of way:

  • 312 St Clair overnight; and
  • 512 St Clair.

Buses replace the cars along both routes.

The work zone blocks bus access into St Clair West Station terminal. Buses along the replacement route and along these routes drop off or pick up passengers on the street beside the station:

  • 33 Forest Hill;
  • 90 Vaughan;
  • 126 Christie.

Track repairs on St. Clair Avenue West between Vaughan and Bathurst and the resulting TTC service changes continue until October 3 (4 a.m.).

(Note that buses are already replacing streetcars along routes 312 / 512 west of Lansdowne Avenue during construction on the railway bridge between Keele Street / Weston Road and Old Weston Road.)

Crews work only in the track area — the centre lanes — on St. Clair West to

  • saw-cut concrete;
  • break and remove the old concrete;
  • replace the old rail with new rail; and
  • install new concrete.

The crews break and remove concrete only during daytime. However, they will conduct some activities “around-the-clock” to ensure “quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

Expect to hear noise and see lights from construction vehicles and machinery.

The City of Toronto may prohibit street parking near the work zone. And, the work zone may restrict motorists from turning onto or off of St. Clair West.

“Paid-duty” Toronto Police Service officers or flag persons may be on site to help direct pedestrians, cyclists and motorists near the work zone.

Transit agencies often interline vehicles along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — human resources (drivers) and physical resources (vehicles). For example, when an northbound bus along the 126 Christie route leaves St Clair West Station, it continues further northward along the 33 Forest Hill route. After completing a round trips along route 33, it returns to St Clair West Station, then continues further southward along route 126.
