Metrolinx and its contractors continue upgrading GO Transit’s Barrie line as part of the GO Expansion Program.

Due to GO Expansion construction this weekend, GO is cancelling all train service along the 65 Barrie line Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3.
Buses replace the trains, operating between Allandale Waterfront and Highway 407 Bus Terminal so that you can connect to TTC subway trains along Line 1 Yonge - University southbound service to Union.
GO isn’t providing train or bus service at Downsview Park GO Station. Board TTC Line 1 trains at Highway 407 or Union stations to travel to and from Downsview Park.
Due to the ongoing effects of this weekend’s construction, GO is also adjusting service along the line from Monday, October 4 until Tuesday, October 13. Most trains arrive in or leave stations as much as three minutes earlier or later than usually.
Metrolinx is expanding key areas of the Barrie-Line corridor to support improving service by adding a second track in the future. It’s also significantly upgrading:
Specifically this weekend, Metrolinx is:
- paving a platform at King City GO Station;
- installing a turnout between Maple and Rutherford GO stations — a step toward future double-tracking the line; and
- grouting near Prescott Avenue (.pdf) in Toronto (between Eglinton and St. Clair avenues west).
GO is also revising service along the 31 Kitchener line this weekend. And, GO buses replace UP Express trains.
Metrolinx and GO plan to accommodate more passengers and increase service along the Barrie line, as part of their GO Expansion Program (formerly “regional express rail”).
During this closure, GO explains:
“Crews conducted foundational work for a second track and corridor improvements. At Aurora GO, crews conducted signalling and track work, including installing a new turnout to connect the northern track to the second track. Crews also installed track across Centre Street and completed the related paving work.
“In the corridor between Downsview Park GO and Rutherford GO, crews carried out work to protect the existing watermain, including encasing it where required. This also included grouting the culvert and manholes to seal and reinforce them. At King City GO, crews installed underground utilities, carried out repaving to support platform construction, and conducted corridor grading in preparation for the installation of a noise wall and an underground raceway for electrical systems. At Maple GO, crews worked to convert an existing turnout into a crossover and conducted signal upgrades. At Caledonia GO, crews installed 150 metres of subdrain - an underground network of perforated pipes used to collect and remove excess subsurface water from soil and foundations.
“In addition,?essential maintenance was done along the line including work using a specialized rail milling machine designed for rail improvement and to maximize the operational efficiency of the system.
“Work was also carried out within the rail corridor surrounding Union Station, including preparing and strengthening the track foundation, track surfacing, and bringing in new ballast and track components for upcoming rail upgrades. This work was done using Metrolinx’s new work trains and yellow plant fleet, which are specialized machines that move materials and complete work directly within the rail corridor, increasing efficiency and limiting road transport.”
