Bus dispute talks on

An end to the long-standing Burnhamthorpe Rd. bus dispute with the Toronto Transit Commission may be at hand, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion says.

McCallion and transportation commissioner Angus McDonald will meet Feb. 5 with TTC chair Brian Ashton and TTC boss Rick Ducharme to discuss the issue, she said yesterday.

The meeting will take place in a positive atmosphere as a result of recent olive branches extended by both sides.

Ashton wrote a letter to McCallion thanking her profusely for Mississauga’s help in providing buses along Bloor St. after a fire at Old Mill subway station on Dec. 8.

McCallion responded yesterday by praising Ashton for bringing a fresh approach and goodwill since becoming TTC chair last month.

McCallion openly feuded with former TTC chair Howard Moscoe over the dispute. It reached the boiling point in 1998,when the TTC barred her city’s Burnhamthorpe Rd. buses from using the Islington terminal.

Toronto residents living along Burnhamthorpe Rd. had complained to the TTC about noise and pollution from 300 buses using the street daily. The TTC demanded that Mississauga remove them.
