506 Carlton Trackwork to Begin

The arrival of spring means road construction and the TTC is no different. After upgrading most of the King streetcar’s trackwork through most of last year, this year the TTC moves to 506 Carlton. Diversions around construction zones start on Monday, March 8, when the first segment, College Street between Ossington and Bathurst, loses transit service for the next several weeks. On Thursday, March 18, the section between Ossington and Lansdowne closes. 506 Carlton cars will use Dundas Street while the diversions take place. Between March and November, all rails between Sheridan Avenue (east of Lansdowne) and Coxwell will be replaced.

The TTC has a web page listing the diversions to come on the line. The work is required because most of the track along the route is old and in serious need of replacement. Construction will install a new design of streetcar track that will muffle vibrations, reduce maintenance requirements and extend the life of the line. As the project continues, city crews will replace watermains, resurface roads and repair and improve local sidewalks. The City of Toronto has its own web page on the project here including a FAQ here.
