Winter Woes

The sky may be clear and yesterday’s Alberta clipper gone, but today is not a good day to head downtown. A major power outage has gripped Toronto’s downtown. Cold weather burst a water main which flooded an electrical substation, shorting things out. The hospitals along University Avenue are operating on emergency power and, of course, subway service has been affected. Some reports indicate that that the Yonge-University-Spadina line has been split in two, with trains on Yonge turning back at Bloor and trains on Spadina turning back at St. George.

Still, it could have been worse: it could have been Monday’s rush hour. Work crews are cleaning up the mess and power should be restored shortly.

Update: The area of the power outage was quickly rolled back to a few blocks in downtown Toronto. Disrupted streetcar and subway services were quickly returned to normal.
