Ouch. Fare Hike This April?

The city’s annual budget problems and the province’s continued slow pace in living up to its funding commitments may have resulted in a fare hike at the TTC, starting this April. Despite hard negotiations, transit commissioners came up with an operating budget that was $10 million short of anticipated expenses.

This is in addition to the nearly $100 million in capital expenses the city asked the TTC to cut. A number of necessary maintenance projects will have to be delayed as the TTC copes with this serious funding shortfall.

Only a provincial bailout can stop the fare hike and a cutback in the TTC’s quality of service. The province’s City of Toronto Act (which gives Toronto the ability to charge its own gas taxes) is still in planning stages and is not expected to be passed until later this year.
