TTC Celebrates 25 Billionth Rider, Considers Investing Own Pension in New Lines

The 25 billionth rider to pass through a subway gate or surface vehicle door was selected by a draw held yesterday at a ceremony at Eglinton station’s bus terminal. Mouris Moussa was picked on the basis of his story about his first ride on the TTC after he and his wife arrived in Canada as new immigrants. The full details of the ceremony can be found in the TTC’s press release here. Moussa’s full story can be found here.

As the TTC enters its post 25 billion-era, the Toronto Star reports that there might be a glimmer of hope for new subway construction. After the province proposed $30 billion in infrastructure construction through ReNew Ontario, helped along with funds from private investors, some within the TTC are floating the idea of using the worker pension plan as an investment tool. “Why not?” says TTC GM Rick Ducharme. Pension VP and TTC General Secretary Vince Rodo adds “Our plan helps build a project that would be of great benefit… We are interested if the risk and returns are appropriate.”

Unless Vince Rodo is a union member, the union leadership has so far been silent about this proposal.

Sheppard Subway Closures
