Storm cleanup and road closures

Friday afternoon’s severe thunderstorm resulted in significant challenges for the TTC. Buses had to fight their way through heavier than usual congestion, with numerous traffic signals malfunctioning particularly in North York and Scarborough, and in some cases they had to wade through flooded roadways that had turned into rivers and lakes.

While the storm has long passed, the TTC will be dealing with the aftermath for weeks. A section of Finch Avenue West between Sentinel Road and Tobermory Drive (south of York University) was completely washed out, and the Toronto Star reports that it may take up to a month to rebuild the road. Until the emergency roadwork is completed, riders on the busy 36 Finch West bus should expect diversions, and will likely experience delays and more crowded buses as traffic diverts around the closure. Other shorter-term closures due to flooding damage are also in effect in the north end of the city, including Steeles Avenue east of Dufferin Street. Check back here, and on the TTC’s website, for news on closures affecting service.
