The Capital Budget that Ate Toronto

The Globe and Mail is reporting that the City of Toronto’s capital budget for 2006 is $1.3 Billion. The TTC’s capital budget accounts for nearly $500 million of that number.

Fortunately, the City of Toronto is able to pay for most of this thanks to contributions by the provincial and federal governments. Indeed, federal contributions, which had to be earmarked towards transit improvements, are partly responsible for the increase in this budget. Toronto and the TTC have no shortage of needy projects to spend the money on, from long deferred road repairs to replacement buses and subway cars.

The article notes that despite the welcome funds, there is still no money for any subway construction. For that, it may be interesting to watch the next Ontario budget.
