The TTC as Public Art

pollykoTTC.jpg

The debate of advertising on the TTC, especially wrap advertising, is heating up today, thanks to the efforts of the Toronto Public Space Committee. The TPSC is sponsoring a public art show wherein contributors show their ideas for “re-imagining the TTC”. The show opens today and runs until Sunday. The Toronto Star has a major article on the group’s efforts here, and points to statements suggesting that TTC riders would be willing to make up the shortfall in their fares if the TTC would stop wrapping buses, streetcars and subways in advertising. Currently, advertising pays for the equivalent of four cents of every ride on the system.

You can visit this art show at the XPACE Gallery at 303 Augusta in Kensington Market. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m., and there is a launch party to be held tomorrow from 7 to 11 p.m.
