Trackwork begins on upper Gerrard between Coxwell and Main on Monday, April 3. Gerrard Street will be reduced to a single westbound lane, making replacement shuttle service impossible on that street. To compensate, the TTC will divert 506 Carlton streetcars to Bingham Loop via Coxwell, Queen and Kingston Road. Service will be increased on the 92 Woodbine South and 64 Main bus routes so that passengers can transfer from Bloor-Danforth subway to Carlton streetcars on Kingston Road. Service on 12 Kingston Road will not be altered, even though it provides another connection between the subway and the Carlton cars. Passengers hoping to avoid possible crowds at Main Street might want to use this connection so they can board the Carlton cars at the end of the line. Details of the diversion can be found here.
This Sunday, the TTC will be removing streetcars from Queens Quay again, so that overhead can be replaced in the Bay Street tunnel. 510 Spadina cars will operate from Spadina station to Queens Quay only, and buses will replace streetcars between Union Station and the Exhibition. Construction will continue until early May. Details can be found here.
As streetcar service on Queens Quay has only just resumed after being stopped due to trackwork in the Bay Street tunnel earlier this year, and as service will likely be disrupted again as the tracks are upgraded on Fleet Street, one has to wonder why these projects weren’t planned to occur simultaneously. But at least residents and businesses along Queens Quay can rest assured that, once all of these projects are completed, service should remain stable for years to come.
Starting Sunday, the Scarborough RT will be closing earlier, for maintenance that will continue until November. The last train will leave McCowan station at 11:47 p.m. and Kennedy station at 11:58 p.m. inutes earlier than usual. Express buses will pick up the slack, stopping at Midland/Lawrence, Midland Ellsemere, McCowan station and the Scarborough Town Centre. The first bus leaves Scarborough Centre at 11:49 p.m. and Kennedy at 12:04 a.m. The service will operate for about ninety minutes, with the last bus leaving Scarborough Centre at 1:25 a.m. and Kennedy at 1:40 a.m.
Finally, the Bloor-Danforth subway will be closed between Ossington and St. George stations this Sunday and next from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Extra work is required on the segment, so the TTC will be operating the subway in two sections, with shuttle buses running between the two stops. These buses will also stop at the Christie/Bloor, Bathurst/Bloor and Spadina/Bloor intersections. Details can be found here.
