New Subway Mock-Up Unveiled to the Public

Torontonians will get their first look at what may be the next generation of subway cars starting Tuesday, June 6.

The Toronto Transit Commission is looking to purchase 234 subway cars, to be delivered by 2011. Among other features, the TTC expects that the cars will be delivered in six-car articulated trains, within which passengers will be able to walk the length of the train. The new look cars will be able to carry more passengers by opening up the space between each cars, and spreading out the load of the train more evenly.

The interior of a T1 car has been modified to show what the interior of the new cars will look like. Mirrors will simulate the gangway aspect of the new trains. This display car will be viewable to the public from this Tuesday until June 20th on the west track of the southbound platform of Davisville station, Monday to Friday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The car will also be open on Thursdays between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. From there, the car will be displayed at Finch, Kennedy, Kipling and Downsview stations. This web page by the TTC has more details about the showings, as well as technical specifications and fly-through animations of the new equipment.
