Upcoming and recent GTA transit service changes



this post updates the information and replaces yesterday’s posting.

Several Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton transit agencies will introduce service changes, starting this weekend. Others have recently introduced changes.

They will: improve or revise existing services; cancel routes; re-instate or introduce seasonal services; detour routes around special events; detour routes around ongoing construction projects; and make other changes.

Improve or revise existing services

Toronto Transit Commission

29
Dufferin: Beginning Sunday, May 13, the TTC will provide new additional service to Exhibition Place and Ontario Place. The new 29D Exhibition / Princes’ Gates service will operate along the north side of Exhibition Place, serving BMO Field (the new soccer stadium and home of Toronto’s professional Major League Soccer team, Toronto FC), the Exhibition (East) Loop, Exhibition GO Station the Ricoh Coliseum (home of Toronto’s American Hockey League team, the Toronto Marlies) and the Direct Energy Centre (formerly the National Trade Centre). Buses on this branch will run at all times of the week, throughout the year. Southbound buses will operate along Dufferin Street, Saskatchewan Road and Manitoba Drive to new loop at the Princes’ Gates. Northbound buses will operate from the Princes’ Gates along Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Dufferin, Springhurst Avenue, Fort Rouille Street, the Exhibition (West) Loop and Dufferin. Map.

The TTC will also operate its usual seasonal 29B Exhibition and Ontario Place service after 9 a.m., seven days a week. Construction at Wilson Station will also affect this route.

Only buses operating from Wilson Station serve these two branches. Buses operating on the 29A branch from Wingold Avenue continue to end their routes in the Exhibition West loop during the morning and afternoon peak periods.


Cancel routes

Barrie Transit

37 Commercial: Barrie Transit will cancel this route after Friday, May 11.

26 Sunnidale: Barrie Transit will cancel this route after Saturday, May 12.


Re-instate seasonal services

Hamilton Street Railway

9 Rock Gardens: Beginning Sunday, May 13 the HSR will re-instate its regular summer weekend and holiday service to the Royal Botanical Gardens and two cemeteries on the border between Hamilton and Burlington. Buses follow the regular 8 York route to York Boulevard and Dundurn Street North and then continue westward along York Boulevard and Plains Road, Spring Garden Road and Botanical Drive to Woodland and Holy Sepulchre Cemeteries. Buses on this route pass the Rock, Rose and Laking Gardens, travel to the cemeteries and then return to downtown Hamilton. Map and schedule.

Toronto Transit Commission

511 Bathurst: During reconstruction of streetcar tracks along Fleet Street, the TTC has diverted this route eastward along Queens Quay West and through the Bay Street tunnel to Union Station. During the diversion, on weekends and holidays until Labour Day the TTC will introduce a modified fare collection procedure at Harbourfront to speed boarding of streetcars at busy stops at busy times.

Passengers who board streetcars at the eastbound stops on Queens Quay West at Bathurst and Portland Streets, Lower Spadina Avenue, Rees, Simcoe, and York Streets, and at the northbound platform at Queens Quay Station, may enter the streetcars through any door and will not have to pay a fare or receive a transfer. Customers boarding streetcars at these stops will pay their fares instead when they leave the streetcar at Union Station.

At all other stops, passengers will pay as they issue and may receive transfers. From Monday to Friday during the summer, and seven days a week after Labour Day, passengers will again pay as they enter and may receive transfers at all stops.

6 Bay: Starting Sunday, May 13, the TTC begins operating bus service during the early evening on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays thourghout the summer. Buses run every 17 minutes, adding service for passengers heading to or from the Toronto Island ferry docks or the East Bayfront.

172 Cherry Street: The TTC is again extending the route from Commissioners Street to Cherry Beach (Clarke Beach Park) during the daytime and evening on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays this summer. Beginning Sunday, May 13, buses run every 20 minutes on Saturdays and every 30 minutes on Sundays and holidays, from 9 a.m. until midnight.

29 Dufferin: Beginning Sunday, May 13, the TTC will begin to operate its seasonal 29B Exhibition and Ontario Place” service to bring service closer to Ontario Place after 9 a.m. every day. Southbound buses will operate southward along Dufferin Street, eastward along Saskatchewan Road and Princes’ Boulevard, travelling south of the new BMO Field >(the new soccer stadium and home of Toronto’s professional Major League Soccer team, Toronto FC). Passengers can walk to Ontario Place from the stop at the stadium. Northbound buses operate eastward along Princes’ Boulevard, northward along Nunavut Road, west- and northward along Nova Scotia Road, westward along Manitoba Drive and Saskatchewan Road, northward along Dufferin Street, westward along Springhurst Avenue, southward along Fort Rouille Street, eastward through the Exhibition (West) Loop and then northward along Dufferin Street. Map. The TTC is also introducing a trial, year-round extension to the Princes’ Gates on May 13. Construction at Wilson Station will also affect this route.

86 Scarborough: Starting Sunday, May 13, the TTC will again extend the route to the Toronto Zoo on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays throughout the summer. Starting on Monday, May 14, it will also offer passengers later service from the Toronto Zoo in the early evening, Monday to Friday. The last bus will leave from the zoo at 8:30 p.m.

85 Sheppard East: Starting on Saturday, May 19, the TTC will provide later bus service from the Toronto Zoo in the early evening on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The last trips to Don Mills Station and Rouge Hill GO Station will leave the zoo about 8:30 p.m.

510 Spadina: Since April 1, the TTC has operated late evening service, seven days a week, on the 510 Spadina route, because ridership to Harbourfront increases in the summer. Late evening service from Monday to Friday operates every 20 minutes. Late evening service on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays operates every 10 minutes.

Starting Sunday, May 13, the TTC will also increase service all day on weekends and holidays, so that streetcars run every 10 minutes at all times.

Also starting on Sunday, May 13, the TTC will again introduce its modified fare collection procedure at Harbourfront to speed boarding of streetcars at busy stops at busy times on weekends and holidays until Labour Day.

92 Woodbine South: Starting on Sunday, May 13, the TTC will operate late evening service on weekends and holidays on this route to accommodate larger numbers of passengers travelling to and from the lakeshore.


Divert routes around special events

Mississauga Transit:

3 Bloor: During the Mississauga Marathon early on Sunday, May 13, the City of Mississauga will close Burnhamthorpe Road from Duke of York Boulevard to Mavis Road. Westbound Mississauga Transit buses on the 3 Bloor route will detour by operating along their regular Sunday route Hurontario Street and Central Parkway and then proceed northward along Hurontario Street, westward along Robert Speck Parkway, northward along Shipp Drive and westward along Rathburn Road to the City Centre Terminal. Eastbound buses will reverse this routing. The detour will continue from the start of service until marathon participants have cleared the streets, probably around 9 a.m.

26 Burnhamthorpe: During the Mississauga Marathon early on Sunday, May 13, the City of Mississauga will close Burnhamthorpe Road, between Hurontario Street and Mississauga Road. Westbound Mississauga Transit buses on the 26 Burnhamthorpe route will detour by operating along their regular Sunday route to Burnhamthorpe and Hurontario Street and then proceed northward along Hurontario Street, westward along Robert Speck Parkway, northward along Shipp Drive and westward along Rathburn Road to the City Centre Terminal. The buses will then continue westward along Rathburn, northward along Creditview Road, westward along Eglinton Avenue and then southward along Mississauga Road where they start to follow their regular route. Eastbound buses will reverse this routing. The detour will continue from the start of service until marathon participants have cleared the streets, probably around 9 a.m.

1 Dundas: During the Mississauga Marathon early on Sunday, May 13, the City of Mississauga will close Dundas Street west of Mississauga Road. Mississauga Transit buses on the 1 Dundas route will not travel west of The Credit Woodlands from the start of service until marathon participants have cleared the streets, probably around 10 a.m.

28 Confederation: During the Mississauga Marathon, southbound Mississauga Transit buses on the 28 Confederation route will detour by operating along their regular Sunday route to Hurontario Street and Central Parkway and then proceed northward along Hurontario Street, westward along Robert Speck Parkway, northward along Shipp Drive and westward along Rathburn Road to the City Centre Terminal. Eastbound buses will reverse this routing. The detour will continue from the start of service until marathon participants have cleared the streets, probably around 9 a.m.

13 Glen Erin: During the Mississauga Marathon early on Sunday, May 13, the City of Mississauga will close Southdown Road, south of Lakeshore Road. Mississauga Transit buses on the 13 Glen Erin route will not travel south of Clarkson GO Station from the start of service until marathon participants have cleared the streets, probably around 11 a.m.

23 Lakeshore: During the Mississauga Marathon early on Sunday, May 13, the City of Mississauga will close Lakeshore Road west of Mississauga Road. Mississauga Transit buses on the 23 Lakeshore route will travel from Clarkson GO Station, northward along Southdown Road, westward along the Queen Elizabeth Way, southward along Hurontario Street, eastward along Park Street, northward along Ann Street, westward along Queen Street to the Port Credit GO Station, then continue westward along Queen Street, southward along Elizabeth Street, then eastward along Lake Shore to Long Branch. Eastbound buses will travel on their normal route to Lakeshore and Elizabeth, then divert eastward along Lakeshore, northward along Hurontario, westward along the Queen Elizabeth Way, then southward along Southdown Road, to Clarkson GO Station. The buses will then continue in service by travelling northward along Southdown Road, westward along Bromsgrove Drive, northward along Winston Churchill Boulevard, eastward along Truscott Drive and then southward along Southdown to the Clarkson GO Station. The detour continues from the start of service until marathon participants have cleared the streets, probably around 11 a.m.


Detour routes around ongoing construction projects

Durham Region Transit

DRT West (Ajax, Pickering)

1 Industrial: Until June, ongoing construction of the Sandy Beach Road Bridge will divert DRT buses from their regular route to the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) plant. Map of the diverted route.

GO Transit

31 Georgetown GO train and bus: Since January, a Town of Halton Hills project to reconstruct Georgetown’s Main Street has closed all northbound lanes between Wesleyan and Cross Streets. GO has diverted service on this route. Buses on all trips to or from Guelph will remain on Highway 7, rather than operating through downtown Georgetown and serve the area from temporary stops just west of Mill Street. Buses on trips ending at, or beginning from, Georgetown will end or begin their trips at the Georgetown GO Station instead of downtown Georgetown. GO buses will not serve the GO ticket agency at Main and Wesleyan during this detour.

Guelph Transit

10 College / Niska: A City of Guelph project to reconstruct Gordon Street began in April and will continue until early June. Northbound Guelph Transit buses on the 10 College / Niska route will detour around the project by operating along their regular route to Water and Maple Streets and then diverting westward along Water Street, northward along Edinburgh Road, eastward along Bristol Street, northward along Yorkshire Street South, eastward along Waterloo Street and then returning to their regular route along Norfolk Street. Southbound buses reverse this routing.

51 Gordon: A City of Guelph project to reconstruct Gordon Street began in April and will continue until early June. Guelph Transit buses serving the 51 Gordon route will continue to operate along Gordon Street, but will not pick up or let off passengers at stops between Water and Waterloo Streets.

52 University / Kortright: A City of Guelph project to reconstruct Gordon Street began in April and will continue until early June. Guelph Transit buses serving the 52 Univrsity / Kortright route will continue to operate along Gordon Street, but will not pick up or let off passengers at stops between Water and Waterloo Streets.

Hamilton Street Railway

11 Parkdale: A City of Hamilton project to complete construction of the Red Hill Valley Parkway has closed Mount Albion Road between King Street East and Hixon Street. The HSR will divert buses on this route until the Parkway opens this fall. Southbound buses follow their regular route to King and Mount Albion, then continue eastward along King, southward along Quigley Road and westward along Greenhill Avenue, before returning to their regular route at Greenhill and Mount Albion. Northbound buses reverse this routing.

Toronto Transit Commission

511 Bathurst: Unexpected track repairs along Fleet Street west of Bathurst Street have forced the TTC to reroute streetcars on the 511 Bathurst route to Union Station. Southbound streetcars operate from Bathurst Station along Bathurst Street, Queens Quay West and through the tunnel under Bay Street to Union Station. Northbound streetcars reverse this routing. 509 Harbourfront shuttle buses will replace the streetcar service along Fleet Street to the Exhibition Loop until the TTC has completed the repairs.

120 Calvington: Beginning Sunday, May 13 until August, the TTC will reconstruct the upper level platform at Wilson Station. It will divert all buses on the 120 Calvington route to the north platform at Wilson Station. TTC buses last used the north platform on March 30, 1996. The next day, it extended subway service north of Wilson to Downsview Station.

29 Dufferin: Beginning Sunday, May 13 until August, the TTC will reconstruct the upper level platform at Wilson Station. It will divert all buses on the 29 Dufferin route to the north platform at Wilson Station. The TTC is also revising service at the south end of this route, adding a new, all-year, all-week branch to the Princes’ Gates and its usual summer extension to bring service closer to Ontario Place, every day after 9 a.m.

505 Dundas: The City of Toronto and the TTC are reconstructing streetcar tracks on Dundas Street and rebuilding the Dundas Street bridge across the Don Valley. Since April 2 and until early June, the TTC is diverting all streetcars on the route. Eastbound cars operate from Dundas West Station along Dundas Street West, College Street, Carlton Street, Church Street, Dundas Street East, Parliament Street, Gerrard Street East and Broadview Avenue to Broadview Station. Westbound streetcars reverse the route.

509 Harbourfront: Unexpected track repairs along Fleet Street west of Bathurst Street have forced the TTC to cancel the 509 streetcar service. 509 Harbourfront Shuttle buses operate from the Exhibition (East) Loop to the loop at Lower Spadina Avenue and Queens Quay West. Eastbound buses run from the Exhibition along Fleet Street, Fort York Boulevard, Lake Shore Boulevard West, Bathurst Street and Queens Quay. Westbound buses operate along Spadina, Queens Quay, Bathurst, Lake Shore, Fort York and Fleet. Streetcars on the 511 Bathurst and 510 Spadina routes serve Queens Quay West between Spadina and Bay Street and operate through the tunnel to Union Station.

165 Weston Rd North: Beginning Sunday, May 13 until August, the TTC will reconstruct the upper level platform at Wilson Station. It will divert all westbound buses on the 165 Weston Road North route to the north platform at Wilson Station.

96 Wilson Beginning Sunday, May 13 until August, the TTC will reconstruct the upper level platform at Wilson Station. It will divert all westbound buses on the 96 Wilson route to the north platform at Wilson Station.


Other changes

Burlington Transit

61 Orchard: On April 30, Burlington Transit revised the schedule of this route so that passengers could better connect with GO Trains at Appleby Station.

95 York Mills: Schedule changes starting Sunday, May 13. The TTC is adding more time to schedules to reduce delays from an upcoming major City of Toronto road reconstruction project on Ellesmere Road.

192 Airport Rocket: Schedule changes, starting Sunday, May 13.

503 Kingston Road tripper: Earlier weekday trip, starting Monday, May 14. The new trip will depart westbound from Bingham Loop (Victoria Park Avenue and Kingston Road) at 6:27 a.m. and will depart eastbound from York Street and Wellington Street West at 7:03 a.m.
