McMaster labour action delays transit service

The Labourers International Union of North America (LIUNA) has set up picket lines at all entrances to McMaster University this morning. The labour action has delayed service on GO Transit’s 46 Highway 407 West route. GO reports that its buses will not serve the McMaster University Terminal while the strikers continue to block the entrances. Passengers are boarding or exiting from buses on Main Street West at Bowman Street, across from the university hospital. Buses are running approximately 25 minutes behind schedule.

The action may also disrupt services on the Hamilton Street Railway’s 1 King, 5 / 52 Delaware / Main West / West Hamilton / Dundas, 10 Beeline Express and 16 Ancaster routes.

Union organizers advise that they intend to continue to picket until noon today. Their dispute is not with McMaster University. LIUNA is in provincial negotiations with construction contractors, including VanBots, the company that is building the new McMaster stadium.
