Guelph Transit first Canadian system to use GPS technology to help riders plan trips

Starting yesterday, Wednesday, June 20, global positioning satellite (GPS) technology and advanced computer modeling will help Guelph Transit riders find out when the next bus on their route will arrive. Riders can use the Internet, handheld devices, or their telephones to receive accurate, real-time arrival and departure information.

Riders can now view transit information on wireless handheld devices including Palms, Blackberries, and Web-capable phones, or access voice information from land telephone lines or cell phones. They can get real-time information by calling 519-341-2468 or by visiting guelph.ca/transit.

The new system, Next Bus, features Web-based map displays with local streets and routes, and real-time information available on the web. It will also incorporate dynamic transit display signs at key locations around the city. One such sign is already in place at Stone Road Mall.

Guelph is the first Canadian city to implement the Next Bus system comprehensively across its entire transit system.
