Service changes, starting June 24



Several Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton transit agencies will revise services, starting this weekend.

They will introduce new routes, extend current routes, revise current routes, re-instate seasonal service, introduce new seasonal services, increase hours of service on current routes, increase frequency of service on current routes, cancel current routes and decrease frequency of service on current routes.

Introduce new routes

Durham Region Transit

501 Aspen Springs: DRT will renumber the former DRT East (Clarington) 1 Aspen Springs route, starting Monday, June 25. DRT is not changing the route.

502 Liberty: DRT will renumber the former DRT East (Clarington) 2 Liberty route, starting Monday, June 25. DRT is not changing the route.

504 Orono / Newcastle: Starting Tuesday, June 26, DRT will extend this twice-weekly route from Orono to Newcastle, replacing the former DRT East (Clarington) 3 Orono service.

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning a DRT bus on the new route will make one trip from Bowmanville to Orono and then to Newcastle and return to Bowmanville. The morning bus leaves the Clarington Centre (mall) in Bowmanville and proceeds along the former 3 Orono route to Orono. It then continues eastward along along Taunton Road, southward along Provincial Highways 35 and 115, southward along North Street Newcastle, eastward along King Street Newcastle, Regional Highway 2 and King Street East Bowmanville, resuming the former 3 Orono route at King and Liberty.

Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, a bus operates the reverse of this route, beginning at the Clarington Centre, operating along the former 3 Orono route to King and Liberty and then eastward to Newcastle, northward to Orono and then back to Bowmanville.

916 Rossland: Starting Monday, June 25, DRT will replace its 16 Rossland East and 18 Rossland West routes with the new 916 route between Durham College / University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Ajax GO Station. The new route also replaces part of the 15 Taunton East and 17 Taunton West routes east of Durham College / UOIT. The 916 route introduces daily, two-way service along Taunton Road, between Arborwood Drive and Town Line Road North, Town Line, between Taunton and Coldstream Drive, Coldstream, between Town Line and Arborwood, Rossland Road between Country Lane and Harwood Avenue and Harwood between Rossland and Kingston Roads.

Westbound DRT buses on the 916 Rossland route will proceed northward from Durham College / UOIT along Simcoe Street North, eastward along Conlin Road East, southward along Ritson Road North, eastward along Taunton Road East, northward along Harmony Avenue North, east- and southward through the Walmart parking area, eastward along Taunton, northward along Town Line, westward along Coldstream, southward along Grandview Street North, westward along Rossland, northward along Wilson Road North, westward along Terrace Drive, westward along Rossland, southward along Harwood, through the Ajax Terminal at Ajax Plaza, then continue southward along Harwood, westward along Hunt Street, northward along Dowty Road, westward along Fairall Street and into the Ajax GO Station Terminal. Eastbound buses will reverse this routing. Buses will operate every 20 minutes on weekdays, half-hourly on weeknights and Saturdays and hourly on Sundays.

915 Taunton: Starting Monday, June 25, DRT will replace its 15 Taunton East and 17 Taunton West routes with the new 915 route between Durham College / University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Ajax and Pickering GO Stations. The new route introduces daily, two-way service along Taunton Road between Country Lane and Westney Road and on Westney, between Taunton and Kingston Roads.

Westbound DRT buses on the 915 Taunton route will proceed southward from Durham College / UOIT along Simcoe Street North, westward along Taunton Road, southward along Westney Road, through Ajax GO Station terminal, continue southward along Westney, westward along Bayly Street and end at the Pickering GO Station. Eastbound buses will reverse this routing. Buses will operate every 20 minutes during weekdays, half-hourly on weekday evenings and Saturdays, and hourly on Sundays.

Buses operating on the current 15 Taunton East and 17 Taunton West routes serve Conlin Road East, Beatrice Street North, and Taunton Road east of Beatrice. Starting Monday, June 25, the new 916 Rossland route will serve this area.

915 Taunton and 916 Rossland route maps: Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa

Introducing new service on Taunton and Rossland Roads west of Country Lane means that DRT will cancel two-way service on Country Lane, between Rossland and Taunton Roads. DRT Centre (Whitby) buses on the 301 West Lynde / Otter Creek route operate northbound along Country Lane between Rossland Road and Medland Avenue. DRT will also cancel service along Arborwood Drive.

301 West Lynde / Otter Creek : DRT will renumber the former DRT Centre (Whitby) 1 Otter Creek / West Lynderoute, starting Monday, June 25. DRT will also extend the route northward along Country Lane, from Twin Rivers Drive to Medland Avenue, eastward along Medland between Country and Brock Street and southward along Brock to Twin Rivers Drive. DRT will cancel service along Twin Rivers Drive and on Country Lane north of Medland Avenue. The current 15 Taunton East, 16 Rossland East, 17 Taunton West and 18 Rossland West routes serve Country Lane in both directions between Taunton and Rossland Roads until Sunday, June 24.

503 Wilmot Creek: DRT will renumber the former DRT East (Clarington) 4 Wilmot Creek route, starting Monday, June 25. The route operates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. DRT is not changing the route.


Extend current routes

Toronto Transit Commission

53 Steeles East : Starting Monday, June 25, the TTC will extend service on the 53 Steeles East express service to Staines Road during Monday-to-Friday peak periods.

Every second express bus will operate on its current route to Steeles Avenue East and McCowan Road and then continue eastward along Steeles to Staines, southward along Staines to Quietbrook Crescent and then loop counter-clockwise around Quietbrook. The buses will then return northward along Staines and westward along Steeles toward Finch Station.

This change introduces new eastbound service along Steeles between McCowan and Markham Roads and in both directions along Steeles between Markham and Staines Roads. It also offers residents of the Morningside Heights neighbourhood a direct connection to the subway.

The TTC plans eventually to build an off-street loop near Steeles and Staines to accomodate buses on this service. It will then cancel service to the temporary loop along Quietbrook.

Alternate buses on the 53 Steeles East express service will continue to turn at McCowan Road, proceeding northward along McCowan, eastward along Elson Street and southward along Markham Road to Steeles and then returning westward toward Finch Station.

The TTC will also increase the hours of service on this route. Sunday and holiday evening service east of Middlefield Road and running on the McCowan, Elson, Markham on-street loop, starts on Sunday, June 24. Monday-Friday late evening service beyond Middlefield Road starts Monday, June 25.


Revise current routes

Durham Region Transit

DRT West (Ajax):

20 Westney: Starting Monday, June 25, DRT buses on this route begin a revised routing seven days a week. The revised route replaces part of the present 40 Applecroft route. Buses on the revised 20 Westney route will operate northbound from Ajax GO Station along their current route to Rossland and Westney Roads. The buses will continue eastward along Rossland, southward along Bennett Avenue and Sullivan Drive, westward along Magill Drive, southward along Coles Avenue, west- and southward along Chapman Drive, south- and westward along Ritchie Avenue and southward along Westney Road to Ajax GO Station.

The revised route introduces one-way southbound service along Bennett, Sullivan, Coles and Chapman. Previously, buses on the 40 Applecroft route operated northbound along these streets.

40 Applecroft: Starting Monday, June 25, DRT buses on this route begin a revised routing. The revised route replaces part of the current 23 Nottingham route. During Monday-to-Friday morning peak periods, DRT buses on the 40 Applecroft route operate from Ajax GO Station northward along Westney Road, eastward along Kingston Road, northward along Harwood Avenue, westward along Chapman Drive, northward along Old Harwood Avenue, eastward along Fishlock Street, northward along Harwood Avenue, westward along Williamson Drive, southward along Seggar Avenue, westward along Rossland Road and southward along Westney to Ajax GO Station.

During Monday-to-Friday afternoon peak periods, the buses reverse this routing: Westney, Rossland, Seggar, Williamson, Harwood, Fishlock, Old Harwood, Chapman, Harwood, Kingston, Westney. During Monday-to-Friday midday and daytime Saturday, the buses follow the afternoon peak-routing to Harwood and Kingston, then continue southward along Harwood to the Ajax Terminal at Ajax Plaza.

Re-instate seasonal service

Toronto Transit Commission

30 Lambton: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will again extend this route into High Park on weekends and holidays from approximately 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Buses will operate from High Park Station southward along High Park Avenue, Colborne Lodge Drive and West Drive then northward along Colborne Lodge Drive and High Park Avenue and into High Park Station, before continuing their trip to Kipling Station. Buses will operate into High Park every 20 minutes on Saturdays and half-hourly on Sundays and holidays. Buses will operate over the extended route until Monday, September 3.


Introduce new seasonal services

Hamilton Street Railway

99 Waterfront Shuttle: Starting Sunday, June 24, the HSR will begin to operate free daily shuttle service between downtown Hamilton and Hamilton Harbour.

This service partially replaces the Gore-to-Shore Shuttle that the HSR operated during previous summers. Buses will operate every half-hour from approximately 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Northbound buses will operate from a stop on King Street West, just west of James Street North, opposite Summers Lane. They will then proceed westward along King, northward along Bay Street, eastward along York Boulevard, northward along James and then eastward along Guise Street to Harbour West, the HMCS Haida and the Parks Canada Discovery Centre. Southbound buses will operate southward along James and westward along King to the starting point. The last day for this service will be Monday, September 3.

Toronto Transit Commission

75 Sherbourne: Starting Sunday, June 24 until Monday, September 3, TTC buses on the 75 Sherbourne route will operate along an expanded on-street loop to provide new service on Queens Quay East, east of Lower Sherbourne Street. Southbound buses operate over the current route to Sherbourne and Lake Shore Boulevard East, and eastward along Lake Shore and southward along Small Street to Queens Quay. Northbound buses would operate from Small and Queens Quay westward along Queens Quay, resuming their current route at Queens Quay and Lower Jarvis Street. Buses on the 75 Sherbourne route would operate over the extended loop at all times.

The TTC will also increase the frequency of service on this route and northbound buses during late weekday evenings, Saturday evenings and all day Sunday will no longer travel beyond South Drive to Summerhill and then continue to Rosedale Station on the 82 Rosedale route.

Map and service details of the 75 Sherbourne route

101 Parc Downsview Park: Starting Sunday, June 24 until Monday, September 3, the TTC will operate bus service from Downsview Station to Downsview Park. The buses operate every 20 minutes Monday to Friday from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends and holidays from approximately 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastbound buses on the 101 Parc Downsview Park route operate from the Aerospace Musuem in Downsview Park, westward along Carl Hall Road, northward along John Drury Crescent and eastward along Sheppard Avenue West to Downsview Station. Westbound buses reverse the routing.

Increase hours of service on current routes

Brampton Transit

66 Wonderland Express : Daily service between the Bramalea Transit Terminal and Canada’s Wonderland starts Monday, June 25.

Toronto Transit Commission

21 Brimley : Monday-Saturday late evening service north of Scarborough Centre Station starts Monday, June 25.

125 Drewry : Weekend and holiday early evening service starts Sunday, June 24.

108 Downsview : Sunday late evening service starts Sunday, June 24.

133 Neilson : Monday-to-Friday late evening service to Morningside Heights starts Monday, June 25.

190 Scarborough Centre Rocket : Weekend and holiday early evening service starts Sunday, June 24. Monday-to-Friday late evening service starts Monday, June 25.

85 Sheppard East : Monday-to-Friday late evening service east of Meadowvale Road to Rouge Hill GO Station starts Monday, June 25.

53 Steeles East : Weekend and holiday evening service east of Middlefield Road, using the McCowan, Elson, Markham on-street loop starts Sunday, June 24. Monday-Friday late evening and weekend and holiday evening service east of Middlefield Road starts Monday, June 25. The TTC will also extend Monday-to-Friday peak period express service on this route eastward to Staines Road, starting Monday, June 25.


Increase frequency on current routes:

511 Bathurst: The TTC will increase service through the summer to accomodate passengers heading for events at Exhibition Place and Ontario Place. On weekends and holidays starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase the frequency of the service. From Monday to Friday, starting Monday, June 25, the TTC will add more ALRVs (articulated — or “bending” — streetcars).

23 Dawes: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency through the summer during the daytime on Sundays.

509 Harbourfront: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency daily through the summer to accomodate passengers heading to the waterfront and events at Exhibition Place and Ontario Place.

64 Main: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency during the daytime on Sundays through the summer to accomodate passengers heading to the beach.

65 Parliament: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency to provide alternative service during construction for passengers who would usually travel on the diverted 505 Dundas route. Buses will operate every nine to 10 minutes at all times and operate later in the evenings until 12:30 a.m.

82 Rosedale: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency late weekday evenings and Saturday evenings and all day Sunday. Buses will no longer continue south onto the 75 Sherbourne route after they pass South Drive.

75 Sherbourne: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency to provide alternative service during construction to passengers who would usually travel on the diverted 505 Dundas route. Buses will operate every seven to 10 minutes at all times. Buses will no longer continue north to Summerhill Avenue and then onto the 82 Rosedale route late on weekday evenings, on Saturday evenings and all day on Sundays while the increased service frequency is in effect. The TTC will also extend this route further east along Queens Quay East this summer.

510 Spadina: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increased frequency daily through the summer to accomodate passengers heading to the waterfront.

92 Woodbine South: Starting Sunday, June 24, the TTC will increase frequency to every 9 to 10 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to accomodate passengers heading to the beach.


Cancel current routes

Durham Region Transit

DRT West (Ajax):

23 Nottingham: Friday, June 22 is the last day of service on this route. A revised 40 Applecroft route will operate along Seggars Avenue, Williamson Drive and Harwood Avenue between Williamson and Fishlock Street, starting Monday, June 25.

DRT West (Pickering and Ajax), Centre (Whitby) and East (Oshawa):

Campus 101 Express: Friday, April 27 was the last day of service on this route which connected Durham College / University of Ontario Institute of Technology with Ajax and Pickering GO Station from September to April each year. The new 915 Taunton and 916 Rossland routes will replace this route with year-round, daily service, starting Monday, June 25.

DRT Centre (Whitby) and DRT East (Oshawa):

16 Rossland East and
18 Rossland West: The last day of service on these routes is Sunday, June 24. Starting Monday, June 25, a new, extended route, 916 Rossland, will replace the routes. The DRT Centre (Whitby) 4 Thickson / Garrard and DRT East (Oshawa) 9 Thornton routes will continue to serve Garrard Road on Sundays.

15 Taunton East and
17 Taunton West: The last day of service on these routes is Sunday, June 24. Starting Monday, June 25, two new, extended routes, 915 Taunton and 916 Rossland, will replace the routes. The DRT Centre (Whitby) 4 Thickson / Garrard and DRT East (Oshawa) 9 Thornton routes will continue to serve Garrard Road on Sundays.

DRT Centre (Whitby):

1 Otter Creek / West Lynde: The last day of service on this route is Sunday, June 24. DRT will renumber this route as 301 West Lynde / Otter Creek and extend it northward along Country Lane to Medland Avenue, starting Monday, June 25.

DRT East (Clarington):

1 Aspen Springs: The last day of service on this route is Sunday, June 24. DRT will renumber the route as 501 Aspen Springs, starting Monday, June 25. DRT is not changing the route.

2 Liberty: The last day of service on this route is Sunday, June 24. DRT will renumber the route as 502 Liberty, starting Monday, June 25. DRT is not changing the route.

3 Orono: The last day of service on this route was Thursday, June 21. DRT will renumber the route as 504 Orono / Newcastle and extend the route to Newcastle, starting Tuesday, June 26.

4 Wilmot Creek: The last day of service on this route is Friday, June 22. DRT will renumber the route as 503 Wilmot Creek, starting Monday, June 25. DRT is not changing the route.
