Government of Canada and Durham Region sign transit agreement

On Monday, February 4, the Government of Canada formalized its agreement to contribute $2.5 million to help the Regional Municipality of Durham develop a long-term transit strategy.

Key elements of the long-term transit strategy include:

  • reviewing best practices in similar-sized regions in Canada and around the world;

  • developing a model to forecast transit ridership and traffic;

  • developing alternative transit network strategies, including rapid transit technology options, improving links to other transit systems, and completing a cost-benefit analysis of each alternative;

  • consulting with residents and other stakeholders;

  • preparing land use guidelines to support sustainable development and transportation patterns; and

  • developing a recommended transit network strategy.

Funding Durham Region’s long-term transportation strategy is part of FLOW, the Government of Canada’s transportation action plan for the Greater Toronto Area.
