Toronto's 2008 operating budget highlights public transit



At its meeting yesterday, Monday, March 31, Toronto City Council approved the City’s $8.2 billion operating budget.

The budget emphasizes a number of public transit programs and initiatives, including:

  • Operating buses on all Toronto routes from 6 a.m. until 1 a.m., Mondays to Fridays, starting in November, 2008 ($2.616 million gross and net);

  • Operating 100 new Ridership Growth Strategy buses to relieve peak overcrowding, starting in November, 2008 ($1.000 million gross and net);

  • Opening a new bus garage to house the 100 new Ridership Growth Strategy buses ($1.996 million);

  • Improving the cleanliness and appearance of subway stations ($1.250 million gross and net);

  • Reducing occupational injury rates by instilling safety as a culture in the TTC ($2.644 million gross and net);

  • Establishing a health and wellness program to reduce absenteeism due to sickness and to improve the general physical well-being of TTC staff ($0.673 million gross and net).
