Arriving (sooner than we thought) at a station near you: Longer GO trains

Update, April 5, 6:20 a.m.: GO originally published inconsistent information about which end of the train passengers headed to Streetsville or Meadowvale Stations should board. GO has corrected the inconsistency and we’ve updated our information in this post, too.

Yesterday’s Transit Toronto posting described GO Transit ‘s plan to start operating longer trains “this summer”.

Much to our surprise, today GO announced that longer GO trains will start appearing on GO’s 21 Milton line sooner than we thought — next week.

Starting with afternoon trips from Union Station on Tuesday, April 8, GO will start phasing in its new 4,000 horsepower MotivePower MP40 locomotives, which will pull 12-car trains along the line. The trains will have two more cars than current trains, and will be the longest commuter trains in North America.

By Thursday, April 10, GO will always schedule 12-car trains on these Monday-to-Friday trips to and from Milton: in the morning, the trips that arrive at Union Station at 7:42 and 8:32 a.m.; and in the afternoon the trips that leave Union at 4:30 and 5:10 p.m.

Longer trains require longer platforms at stations along the line. Most of the stations already have longer platforms, but GO is working to extend the platforms at Meadowvale and Streetsville Stations to accommodate the longer trains. At both stations, GO will only open the doors of specific cars on all trains. It will open all doors at all other stations on the line.

If you’re heading to Streetsville from Union Station in the afternoon, board the train from the east end of the platform (closest to the locomotive.) If you’re heading to Meadowvale from Union Station in the afternoon, board the train at the west end of the platform (farthest from the locomotive.)
