You can celebrate National Environment Week, Sunday, June 1 until Saturday, June 7, 2008 and Clean Air Day, Wednesday, June 4 by taking part in the Commuter Challenge, a national competition to encourage commuters to walk, cycle, take transit, or carpool to work. And, in two area municipalities, you can also ride the bus for free.
All next week, if you use sustainable modes of transportation, you can register in the Challenge by logging your results on Commuter Challenge website. You can register your workplace in the competition or sign up as an individual in your community.
The Challenge is to find the community with the highest proportion of participants committed to smart commuting.
Free transit service
The Cities of Hamilton and Guelph are sponsoring free transit service on Wednesday, June 4 to help their residents meet the challenge.
From 5:30 a.m. until 9:15 on Wednesday, you can ride any Guelph Transit bus for free. In Hamilton, if you have registered to take part in the Commuter Challenge you’ll get an orange armband that will serve as your passport to get into a number of events. On “Totally Transit Wednesday”, anyone wearing an armband will get to ride any Hamilton Street Railway bus without having to pay a fare.
The Smart Commute Association and local Smart Commutes across the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton are helping co-ordinate the activities of employers and commuters who wish to participate in the Challenge. They also help employers organize their efforts and encourage members of the public to get involved by working with partners to host a number of events.
