Ground-breaking for York University busway project today

Today’s Toronto Star and the Globe Mail report that the federal and provincial governments and the City of Toronto will participate in a ceremony launching a project to build a busway between York University and Downsview subway Station.

The bus rapid transit line will follow William R. Allen Road, Dufferin Street, the hydro right-of-way north of, and parallel to, Finch Avenue West and Keele Street. It will allow passengers fast access to the University from the subway and will likely be operating in time for the 2009 — 2010 academic term at York.

The newspapers’ reporters speculate that announcing the busway project means that a complementary project — extending the TTC’s 1 Yonge — University — Spadina subway northwest from Downsview Station through York University and onward to the Vaughan Corporate Centre near Highway 7 and Jane Street will soon follow.

The busway will continue to operate after the subway is open.

Yesterday at London City Hall, the Governments of Canada and Ontario announced $7 billion funding to bolster infrastructure in municipalities in Ontario.

The announcement did not specifically identify projects in the GTA, but the City and TTC expect that part of the funding will apply to the project to extend the subway.

Yesterday, the federal government only specifically announced funding for one transit project: a light rail transit line linking the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.
