Is transit an essential service?
Toronto City Council debates the issue

On October 6, the City of Toronto Executive Committee reviewed a City staff report examining the options for, and the consequences of, designating transit essential.

At the two-day meeting that starts today, City Council will discuss the issue. If Council approves the City will ask the Province of Ontario to pass legislation designating public transit as an essential service in Toronto. If the province designates transit as essential, transit workers may no longer have the power of going on strike during a labour dispute.

Councillors Cesar Palacio and Cliff Jenkins are two members of Council leading the effort to designate public transit essential. They outline their position in today’s National Post.

The Toronto Star’s editorial today supports designating transit as essential.

Jeff Gray of the Globe and Mail reported on the issue yesterday.
