Toronto City Council votes
against designating transit as an essential service

At its meeting yesterday, Toronto City Council voted not to ask the Province of Ontario to designate public transit as an essential service in the city.

Councillors defeated a motion to ask the province for the essential designation by 23 to 22 votes.

Designating transit as an essential service would prevent transit workers from going on strike during a labour dispute.
