The TTC is running into a number of problems this evening as the extreme cold weather makes itself felt throughout the city. Earlier this evening, switch problems at Davisville shut down the Yonge subway between Bloor and Eglinton stations, just a half hour before a major event at the Air Canada Centre was due to let out. Although the disruption report lists this shutdown as still being in effect, riders are reporting that service has resumed, albeit slowly through the Davisville section, as TTC personnel pay closes attention to switches and signals in the above ground sections of the line.

Soon thereafter, a burst pipe flooded a transformer station near Bloor and Dufferin, knocking out power for a significant section of the city. Although trains continued to operate, only emergency lighting was possible for many west end stations. We are now receiving reports that the Bloor-Danforth subway has been shut down between St. George and Kipling stations for the rest of the night, as the battery backups supplying the emergency lighting are fading fast.

The extent of the damage to the transformer station is as yet unknown, but it is possible that problems could continue into the morning commute. If so, riders are asked to expect delays, and look for alternate routes to your destinations.
