GO's West Toronto Diamond project
to improve Georgetown train service



GO Transit announced today (January 16) that it will shortly start working on the next phase of its project to separate GO commuter trains from Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) freight trains along GO’s 31 Georgetown line.

The $277-million West Toronto Diamond grade separation project will reduce the travel time for commuters by lowering Canadian National Railways’ tracks to run below CP’s North Toronto line rather than across it. This will eliminate scheduling conflicts between CP freight trains and GO trains, increasing the frequency of GO service on the Georgetown line. During the next phase of the project, work crews will build new underpasses and start to depress the railway tracks.

The GO Transit Rail Improvement Program (GO TRIP) is providing $159 million to support the project. The Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and municipal governments in Greater Toronto and Hamilton all fund GO TRIP through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.

GO recently completed similar grade separation projects at Snider Diamond, just north of Steeles Avenue West on the 65 Barrie line and Hagerman Diamond, just north of Steeles Avenue East on the 71 Stouffville line.

(A diamond is a junction of two or more railway tracks with curves and switches, resulting in a diamond-shaped layout.)

The West Toronto Diamond lies just north of the complex intersection of Annette Street, Dundas Street West, Dupont Street and Old Weston Road.

So far in the project, work crews have relocated utilities, the Dupont Street bridge, train signals and a major water main. GO expects to complete the project by spring 2011.
