Weekend event affects transit service,
March 29



The Cities of Burlington and Hamilton are closing many streets throughout Sunday, March 29 to accommodate the 115th annual Around the Bay 30k Road Race.

Burlington Transit and the Hamilton Street Railway are revising service during the event. Race participants follow a course that stretches from the east- to the west-end of lower Hamilton and also extends into Burlington, so detours are complex.

The City of Burlington is closing

  • eastbound lanes of North Shore Boulevards East and West between Plains Road West and the Queen Elizabeth Way,
  • eastbound lanes of Plains Road West between Spring Gardens Road and North Shore Boulevard West

and other streets in the Aldershot and Burlington Beach areas from 10:30 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 29. The City is re-opening the streets after the last race participant clears the area.

The City of Hamilton is closing

  • westbound lanes of Barton Street East between the Red Hill Valley Parkway and Woodward Avenue from 10 until 11 a.m.,
  • northeastbound lanes (toward Burlington) of Beach Boulevard between Woodward Avenue / Van Wagner’s Beach Road and Eastport Drive from about 10 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • eastbound lanes of Britannia Avenue between Cannon Street East and Parkdale Avenue North from about 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • eastbound lanes of Cannon Street East between Sherman Avenue North and Britannia Avenue from about 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • all lanes (except one westbound lane) of Melvin Avenue between Parkdale Avenue North and Woodward Avenue from 10 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • northbound lanes of Parkdale Avenue North between Queenston Road and Melvin Avenue from about 10 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • northbound lanes of Sherman Avenue North between Wilson Street and Cannon Street East from about 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • eastbound lanes of Wilson Street between James Street North and Sherman Avenue North from about 9:30 until 11:30 a.m.,
  • all lanes (except one southbound lane) of Woodward Avenue between Melvin Avenue and Beach Boulevard / Van Wagner’s Beach Road from 10 until about 11:30 a.m.,
  • all lanes of York Boulevard between Hess and MacNab Streets North from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.,
  • all lanes of York between Plains Road West and Dundurn Street North from10:45 a.m. until 3 p.m.,
  • eastbound lanes of York between Dundurn and Hess Streets North from 10:45 a.m. until 3 p.m.

From 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., the City is also closing to traffic all streets in an area just north of downtown Hamilton for a shorter 5 km race. Guise Streets East and West, Bay Street North, York Boulevard, Wilson Street and John Street North form the boundaries of this area.

The City is re-opening all streets after the last race participant clears the area.

1 Fairview / Plains

From 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., eastbound buses (operating toward Burlington) start their trips at King and James Streets in downtown Hamilton, then proceed:

westward along King Street West;
north- and eastward along Highway 403;
northward along Highway 6; and then
east- and southward along Plains Road West to York Boulevard,
resuming their regular route, eastward along Plains.

From 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., westbound buses (operating toward Hamilton) proceed along their regular route to Plains Road West and York Boulevard, then detour:

north- and westward along Plains Road West;
southward along Highway 6;
south- and westward along Highway 403;
eastward along Main Streets West and East;
northward along John Street South; and then
westward along King Street East to James Street,
ending their trips.


Hamilton Street Railway

2 Barton

All day, buses leaving downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route all day. From about 9:25 until 9:40 a.m., Hamilton Police Service officers stop all traffic from crossing the intersection of James Street North and York Boulevard / Wilson Street, delaying the buses. Passengers should plan extra time for their trips.

From 10 until 11:30 a.m., westbound buses operate along their regular route to Barton Street East and the Red Hill Valley Parkway, then detour:

northward along the Parkway;
westward along the Queen Elizabeth Way;
westward along Burlington Street East; and then
southward along Parkdale Avenue North to Barton,
resuming their regular route westward along Barton.

From 10 until 11:30 a.m., eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Melvin Avenue and Parkdale Avenue North, then detour:

northward along Parkdale;
eastward along Burlington Street East;
eastward along the Queen Elizabeth Way; and then
southward along the Red Hill Valley Parkway to Barton Street East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Barton.


4 Bayfront

From 7:15 until 9:15 a.m., and from 10:45 a.m. until 3 p.m., buses heading toward downtown Hamilton follow their regular route to King and James Streets.

From 7:15 until 9:15 a.m., and from 10:45 a.m. until 3 p.m., buses leaving downtown Hamilton start their trips at King and James Streets, then proceed:

southward along James Street South;
eastward along Main Street East;
northward along John Streets South and North; and then
westward along Cannon Streets East and West to MacNab Street North,
resuming their regular route northward along MacNab.

From 9:15 until 10:30 a.m., buses heading toward downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route to Burlington Street East and Wellington Street North, then detour:

southward along Wellington; and then
westward along King Street East to James Street,
ending their trips.

From 9:15 until 10:30 a.m., buses leaving downtown Hamilton start their trips at King and James Streets then proceed:

southward along James Street South;
eastward along Main Street East; and then
northward along Victoria Avenues South and North to Burlington Street East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Burlington.

From 10 until 11:30 a.m., eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Glow and Dunn Avenues, then detour:

southward along Dunn;
westward along Brampton Street;
northward along Parkdale Avenue North;
eastward along Burlington Street East;
eastward along the Queen Elizabeth Way; and then
southward along the Red Hill Valley Parkway to Barton Street East;
resuming their regular route eastward along Barton.

From 10 until 11:30 a.m., westbound buses operate along their regular route to Barton Street East and the Red Hill Valley Parkway, then detour:

northward along the Parkway;
westward along the Queen Elizabeth Way;
westward along Burlington Street East;
southward along Parkdale Avenue North;
eastward along Brampton Street; and then
northward along Dunn Avenue to Glow Avenue,
resuming their regular route westward along Glow.


3 Cannon

From 9 until 11:30 a.m., westbound buses operate along their regular route to Roxborough and Strathearne Avenues, then detour:

southward along Strathearne;
westward along Main Street East; and then
westward along King Street East to Wellington Street,
resuming their regular route westward along King.

From 9 until 11:30 a.m., eastbound buses operate along their regular route to Main Street East and John Street South, then detour:

eastward along Main;
around the Queenston Traffic Circle; and then
northward along Strathearne Avenue to Roxborough Avenue,
resuming their regular route eastward along Roxborough.

At 11:30 a.m., buses start their long-term detour around construction on Cannon Street East between Sherman Avenue North and Ottawa Street North.


7 Locke

From 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., buses heading toward downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route to Main Street West and Bay Street South, then detour:

eastward along Main Streets West and East;
northward along John Streets South and North;
westward along Rebecca Street to James Street North; and then
southward along James to King Street,
ending their trips.

All day, buses leaving downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route.

11 Parkdale

From 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., southbound buses operate along their regular route from the Downtown Burlington Terminal to Lakeshore Road and Maple Avenue, then detour:

northward along Maple;
westward along Fairview Street;
west- and southward along the Queen Elizabeth Way;
westward along Burlington Street East;
southward along Parkdale Avenue North;
eastward along Brampton Street;
northward along Dunn Avenue;
westward along Glow Avenue;
southward along Parkdale;
westward along Barton Street East;
southward along Walter Avenue North; and then
eastward along Roxborough Avenue to Parkdale,
resuming their regular route southward along Parkdale.

From 10 until 11:30 a.m., northbound buses operate along their regular route to Parkdale Avenue North and Roxborough Avenue, then detour:

westward along Roxborough;
northward along Walter Avenue North;
eastward along Barton Street East;
northward along Parkdale;
eastward along Glow Avenue;
southward along Dunn Avenue;
westward along Brampton Street;
northward along Parkdale;
eastward along Burlington Street East;
northward along the Queen Elizabeth Way;
northward along Eastport Drive;
southward along Beach Boulevard;
north- and eastward along the Queen Elizabeth Way;
eastward along Fairview Street; and then
southward along Maple Avenue to Lakeshore Road,
resuming their regular route eastward along Lakeshore toward the Downtown Burlington Terminal.

The race may delay buses when they cross Walter Street North at Britannia Avenue. Passengers should plan extra time for their trips.

8 York

From 7 until 10:30 a.m., buses heading toward downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route to York Boulevard and Queen Street North, then detour:

southward along Queen;
eastward along Main Streets West and East;
northward along John Streets South and North;
westward along Rebecca Street to James Street North; and then
southward along James to King Street,
ending their trips.

From 7 until 10:30 a.m., buses leaving downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route to King Street West and Bay Street, then detour:
westward along King; and then
northward along Hess Street North to Cannon Street West,
resuming their regular route westward along Cannon.

From 10:45 a.m. until 3 p.m., buses heading toward downtown Hamilton, start their trips at Lamoreaux Street and Strathcona Avenue North, as usual, traveling northward along Strathcona to Tom Street and then detour:

westward along Tom;
southward along Dundurn Streets North and South;
eastward along Main Streets West and East;
northward along John Streets South and North;
westward along Rebecca Street to James Street North, and then
southward along James to King Street.

From 10:45 a.m. until 3 p.m., buses leaving downtown Hamilton operate along their regular route to King Street West and Bay Street and then detour:

westward along King; and then
northward along Strathcona Avenue North to Lamoreaux Street.
