Gardiner eastbound closed, GO buses detour, May 2 and 3



The City of Toronto is closing the eastbound lanes of the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway between Carlaw Avenue and the Humber River from 11 p.m. this weekend, from Saturday, May 2 until 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3 to conduct the annual spring maintenance.

Closing the Gardiner affects GO Transit bus service on the 18B Hamilton - Union, 16 Hamilton - Union via QEW Express, 21 Milton - Union, 65 Newmarket - Union, 71 Uxbridge - Stouffville - Union and 90B Oshawa - Union routes. Although the buses serve all regular stops, passengers should expect some delays in service.


31 Guelph - Georgetown - Union

From 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 until 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard West at the Humber River, then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Westbound buses operate along their regular route.

16 Hamilton - Union via QEW Express

From 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 until 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard West at the Humber River, then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Westbound buses operate along their regular route.

18 Hamilton - Union

The bus that leaves the Hamilton GO Centre at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, operates along its regular route to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard West at the Humber River, then detours:

eastward along Lake Shore and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming its regular route northward along Bay.

21 Milton - Union

From 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 until 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard West at the Humber River, then detour:

eastward along Lake Shore and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Westbound buses operate along their regular route.

65 Newmarket - Union

From 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 until 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, southbound buses operate along their regular route.

Northbound buses start their trips at the Union Station GO Bus Terminal, as usual, then proceed:

southward along Yonge Street;
eastward along Lake Shore Boulevard East;
southward along Cherry Street;
eastward along Commissioners Street; and then
northward along Don Roadway to the ramp onto the Don Valley Parkway,
resuming their regular route northward along the Parkway.

90B Oshawa - Union

The bus that leaves the Union Station GO Bus Terminal at 6:20 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, starts its trip at the Union Station GO Bus Terminal, as usual, then proceeds:

southward along Yonge Street;
eastward along Lake Shore Boulevard East;
southward along Cherry Street;
eastward along Commissioners Street; and then
northward along Don Roadway to the ramp onto the Don Valley Parkway,
resuming its regular route northward along the Parkway.

71 Uxbridge - Stouffville - Union

From 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 until 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, southbound buses operate along their regular route.

Northbound buses start their trips at the Union Station GO Bus Terminal, as usual, then proceed:

southward along Yonge Street;
eastward along Lake Shore Boulevard East;
southward along Cherry Street;
eastward along Commissioners Street; and then
northward along Don Roadway to the ramp onto the Don Valley Parkway,
resuming their regular route northward along the Parkway.


While the Gardiner is closed, City work crews will:

  • clean the catchbasins to make sure that they drain properly;
  • mark pavement and maintain signs;
  • repair guardrails and asphalt;
  • survey the pavement to evaluate its condition;
  • maintain closed-circuit TV cameras; and
  • evaluate the structures of the Jameson Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West bridges over the Gardiner.
