Tamils Tank Gardiner, Torontonians Take Transit Tomorrow

An ongoing protest by as many as thousand Tamil-Canadians has shut down the Gardiner Expressway this afternoon and threatens to disrupt the Monday morning commute. Protesters calling for the Canadian and American governments to intervene in the Sri Lankan civil war marched down Spadina Avenue and ran up onto the westbound Gardiner onramp, backing up traffic in both directions for miles and forcing the closure of the highway. The Toronto Star has more details.

The protesters are refusing to leave until they are addressed by a federal government official. There is no word yet on when, how, or if the protest will be cleared. The closure of the Gardiner has already snarled traffic in the surrounding streets, and one can imagine the delays that could occur if the Gardiner is kept offline during the Monday morning rush hour.

Be sure to check the news before you head out on Monday morning and, if you have the option, consider taking GO Transit instead of the Gardiner into work on Monday. These trains continue to operate, totally unaffected by the protest.
