Church / Queen construction affects streetcar service,
starting July 20

Update — September 8: Streetcars resumed their regular routes today.

Update — August 10: The TTC is further detouring streetcars operating along the 501 Queen and 301 Queen overnight routes during construction on the Don River bridge.

Update — August 4: Buses replaced streetcars along the 502 Downtowner route. The buses operate along a different detour route around the construction at Church Street and Queen Street East than the streetcars did.

The City of Toronto and the TTC are finally going ahead with a project to rebuild the streetcar tracks along Church Street south of Carlton Street.

They’ll start by rebuilding the tracks at the intersection of Queen Street East, starting next Monday, July 20.

The TTC is detouring streetcars during the project, which should continue until September.

502 Downtowner
501 Queen
301 Queen overnight

From 6 a.m. on Monday, July 20 until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, westbound streetcars operate along their regular route to Parliament Street and Queen Street East, then detour:

southward along Parliament;
westward along King Street East;
northward along Church Street;
westward along Richmond Street East; and then
northward along Victoria Street to Queen East,
resuming their regular route westward along Queen.

Eastbound streetcars operate along their regular route to Queen Street East and Victoria Street, then detour:

southward along Victoria;
eastward along Adelaide Street East;
southward along Church Street;
eastward along King Street East; and then
northward along Parliament Street to Queen East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Queen.

The City and TTC originally announced their project to rebuild the Church Street tracks almost exactly a year ago. Although it announced detours, little work took place and streetcars remained on their regular routes.

In April this year, the City and TTC started a project to weld shorter rails into longer ones to prepare for this year’s project.

The work at the intersection of Church and Queen is only the first phase of a longer project, ongoing into 2010. Even though the detours end after Labour Day, work on the first phase continues until the end of September. During the second phase, from October until December, the City will replace watermains along Church between Carlton Street and Dundas Street East. In early 2010, the City and TTC start the third and final phase of the project to rebuild the roadway, sidewalks and streetcar tracks.

A related project to replace the tracks along Wellington Streets East and West will proceed in another year. Last year, when the City and TTC announced the project for Church Street, it also announced plans to repair the tracks along Parliament Street. That project will also take place in the future.
