The City of Toronto and the TTC are finally going ahead with a project to rebuild the streetcar tracks along Church Street south of Carlton Street.
They’ll start by rebuilding the tracks at the intersection of Queen Street East, starting next Monday, July 20.

The City and TTC originally announced their project to rebuild the Church Street tracks almost exactly a year ago. Although it announced detours, little work took place and streetcars remained on their regular routes.
In April this year, the City and TTC started a project to weld shorter rails into longer ones to prepare for this year’s project.
The work at the intersection of Church and Queen is only the first phase of a longer project, ongoing into 2010. Even though the detours end after Labour Day, work on the first phase continues until the end of September. During the second phase, from October until December, the City will replace watermains along Church between Carlton Street and Dundas Street East. In early 2010, the City and TTC start the third and final phase of the project to rebuild the roadway, sidewalks and streetcar tracks.
A related project to replace the tracks along Wellington Streets East and West will proceed in another year. Last year, when the City and TTC announced the project for Church Street, it also announced plans to repair the tracks along Parliament Street. That project will also take place in the future.
