VIA extends rail deal until Friday

VIA Rail Canada has extended the deadline for its special promotion to “apologize” to passengers for the recent, brief strike by 350 locomotive engineers, members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.

If you buy an economy-class ticket to travel anywhere in Canada or a business-class to travel within the Québec City-to-Windsor corridor between now and 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) on Friday, July 31, you’ll receive a 60 percent discount on the regular adult fare. Your trip has to take place between now and December 14, 2009.

Originally, the deadline for this deal was tonight at 11:59 p.m., Pacific Time, but the deal has proven to be so popular that VIA has moved the deadline ahead by two days.

According to the Toronto Star, “VIA stepped up post-strike damage control and… extended its 60 per cent discount offer after customers jammed phone lines and crashed the agency’s website in a rush to buy tickets.

“The deadline… was moved… ‘due to the overwhelming response from customers,’ Via Rail spokeswoman Ashley Doyle said yesterday.”
