Minor fire shuts down subway service during rush hour yesterday

A minor fire at the Yonge Station on the TTC’s 2 Bloor - Danforth subway briefly resulted in rush-hour chaos yesterday afternoon, Monday, September 14.

Toronto Fire Services fought the fire for about 30 minutes before service could resume. Smoke had appeared from a mechanical room at the station and caused the alarm.

The TTC held eastbound trains at St. George Station and westbound trains at Chester Station until fire crews extinguished the blaze. Subway trains operating along the 1 Yonge - University - Spadina line passed through the Bloor station above Yonge Station without stopping.

Transit Toronto readers report extremely crowded platforms at both St. George and Chester Stations until service resumed.
