Pick up transit tickets, newspapers, coffee... and avocados
at Union Station tomorrow

Commuters passing through Union Station tomorrow should head upstairs to the street for fresh music, fresh air and fresh fruit — instead of burrowing through the tunnels of the downtown Toronto PATH system.

L’Associación de Productores y Empacadores Exportadores de Aguacate de Michoacán (the Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Michocán or APEAM) is giving away 20,000 fresh avocados to passers-by at the south-west corner of Bay Street and Front Street West at Union Station from 6 until 11 a.m. on Mexican Independence Day, tomorrow, Wednesday, September 16.

In addition to the free avocados, highlights include:

  • Mexico’s Consul General in Toronto, Carlos Pujalte, raising the Mexican flag to honour Mexican independence;
  • a live mariachi band performing traditional tunes and a dance group demonstrating authentic Mexican dance;
  • The Food Network’s Chef Juan Salinas preparing tasty treats using recipes with avocados, including authentic guacamole and a chocolate avocado dessert; and
  • a chance to win an all-inclusive trip to the Riviera Maya.

(Michocán is a state of Mexico, stretching from the Pacific coast to the interior, close to Mexico’s two largest cities, Mexico City and Guadalajara.)
