Gardiner Expressway closed Saturday morning;
GO buses detour



The City of Toronto is closing the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway between Carlaw Avenue and the Humber River from 5 a.m. until noon this Saturday, October 10.

GO Transit buses operating to and from the Union Station GO Bus Terminal detour along Lake Shore Boulevard instead of the Gardiner.

These routes detour: 16 Hamilton - Union via QEW express, 18B Hamilton - Union; 21 Milton - Mississauga - Union, 31 Guelph - Georgetown - Union, 65 Newmarket - Union, 71 Uxbridge - Stouffville - Union; 90C Newcastle - Union.


31 Guelph - Georgetown - Union

Until noon on Saturday, October 10, eastbound buses operate along their regular route to the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway and the Humber River exit to Lake Shore Boulevard West, then proceed:

eastward along Lake Shore Boulevard West and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Westbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, then proceed:

westward along Lake Shore Boulevard West to the Humber entrance to the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway,
resuming their regular route westward along the Gardiner.

18B Hamilton - Union

The early-morning eastbound bus that leaves the Hamilton GO Centre at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 10 operates along its regular route to the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway and the Humber River exit to Lake Shore Boulevard West, then proceeds:

eastward along Lake Shore West and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming its regular route northward along Bay.

16 Hamilton - Union via QEW express
21 Milton - Mississauga - Union

Until noon on Saturday, October 10, eastbound buses operate along their regular routes to the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway and the Humber River exit to Lake Shore Boulevard West, then proceed:

eastward along Lake Shore West and Harbour Street to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Westbound buses operate along their regular routes to Yonge Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, then proceed:

westward along Lake Shore Boulevard West to the Humber entrance to the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway,
resuming their regular route westward along the Gardiner.

65 Newmarket - Union

Until noon on Saturday, October 10, southbound buses operate along their regular route to the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard East, then detour:

westward along Lake Shore East to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Northbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Queens Quay, then proceed:

eastward along Queens Quay East and Lake Shore Boulevard East to Don Roadway; and then northward along the Don Roadway, resuming their regular route northward along the Don Valley Parkway.

90C Newcastle - Union

The early-morning eastbound bus that leaves downtown Toronto at 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, October 10 operates along its regular route to Yonge Street and Queens Quay, then proceeds:

eastward along Queens Quay East and Lake Shore Boulevard East to Don Roadway; and then northward along the Don Roadway, resuming its regular route northward along the Don Valley Parkway.

71 Uxbridge - Stouffville - Union

Until noon on Saturday, October 10, southbound buses operate along their regular route to the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard East, then detour:

westward along Lake Shore East to Bay Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Bay.

Northbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Queens Quay, then proceed:

eastward along Queens Quay East and Lake Shore Boulevard East to Don Roadway; and then northward along the Don Roadway, resuming their regular route northward along the Don Valley Parkway.


The City is closing the expressway so that work crews can perform the regular fall maintenance of the roadway, including:

  • grinding asphalt and repaving;
  • cleaning catch basins to make sure they drain properly;
  • repairing and maintaining expressway lighting;
  • marking pavement and maintaining signs;
  • repairing guard rails and the centre median;
  • repairing road surfaces;
  • maintaining closed-circuit television cameras; and
  • sweeping and removing litter.
