Santa comes to four towns this weekend as Santa Claus Parades and other special events take place in communities throughout the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton this weekend.

The events affect transit services in Guelph, Hamilton, Pickering, Richmond Hill and Toronto.

The Town of Ajax is closing

  • Bayly Street West between Mackenzie Avenue and Harwood Avenue South,

and the Region of Durham is closing - Harwood Avenue South between Bayly Street West and Achilles Road

on Saturday evening to accommodate the parade.

The parade affects Durham Region Transit and GO Transit service.

On Saturday, November 14 from 6 until 8 p.m., westbound buses operate along their regular route to Kingston Road (Highway 2) and Harwood Avenue, then detour:

westward along Kingston; and then
southward along Westney Road South to the Ajax GO Station,
resuming their regular route.

Eastbound buses reverse this routing.

The parade in Pickering also affects buses operating along this route.


Guelph

Guelph Santa Claus Parade

The City of Guelph is closing

  • Woolwich Street between Speedvale Avenue and Macdonell Street

on Sunday to accommodate the annual parade.

(The route is different this year because of the ongoing construction on Norfolk Street and Wyndham Street South.)

Guelph Transit is detouring buses in downtown Guelph during the event so that buses start and end their trips on Macdonell Street west of Wyndham Street North, instead of at St. George’s Square. All buses traveling through downtown Guelph operate along detour routes.

54 Arkell

Buses operate along their regular route.

6 Auden / Eastview

From 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, inbound buses skip their regular stops along Elizabeth Street between Stevenson Road North and Arthur Street North and on Macdonell Street between Woolwich Street / Wellington Street East and Wyndham Street North.

Outbound buses start their trips on the north side of Macdonell Street west of Wyndham Street North. They skip their regular stops on Macdonell Street between Wyndham Street North and Woolwich Street / Wellington Street East and on Elizabeth Street west of Stevenson Street North.

10 College / Niska

From 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, outbound buses start their trips on the north side of Macdonell Street, west of Wyndham Street North. Buses continue to detour during construction along Wyndham Street South.

22 Conestoga

From 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, inbound buses skip their regular stops on London Road between Yorkshire Street North and Norfolk Street and on Woolwich Street at Norfolk.

Outbound buses start their trips on the south side of Macdonell Street, west of Wyndham Street North. They skip their regular stops on Suffolk Street West between Norfolk Street and Yorkshire Street North.

8 General Hospital

From 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, inbound buses skip their regular stops on Eramosa Road between Delhi and Woolwich Streets.

Outbound buses start their trips on the south side of Macdonell Street west of Wyndham Street North and skip their regular stops on Eramosa Road between Woolwich and Delhi Streets.

Buses also detour off Waverley Drive between Knightswood Boulevard and Stevenson Street North, starting Sunday, November 15.

51 Gordon

Buses operate along their regular route but continue to serve temporary stops during the construction on Norfolk Street. From 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, outbound buses start their trips on the north side of Macdonell Street west of Wyndham Street North.

4 York Road

From 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, inbound buses skip their regular stops on Ontario Street between York Road and Neeve Street, Neeve between Ontario and Surrey Street East and Surrey East at Wyndham Street South.

Outbound buses start their trips on Macdonnel Street west of Wyndham Street North and skip their regular stops on Wyndham Street South at Farquhar Street, Neeve Street at Ontario Street and on Ontario between Neeve and York Road. Buses continue to detour during construction along Wyndham Street South.

Hamilton

Hamilton events include the Canadian Football League quarter-final (November 15) and the Hamilton Santa Claus Parade (November 14).

All Hamilton Street Railway routes

On Sunday, November 15, you can ride any HSR bus for free to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarter-final game against the British Columbia Lions at 1 p.m. — if you hold a valid ticket to the game. With the HSR’s Ticket to Ride program, you can ride free of fare to Ivor Wynne Stadium for as much as three hours before game time and free of fare from the stadium until the end of service.

Tiger-Cats Express shuttles

Four free HSR shuttle buses also speedily transport ticket-holders from four terminals across the city to the stadium and back again after the game is over. You can view the schedule for the shuttle buses here. (.pdf)

You can also ride D.A.R.T.S. (Disabled and Aged Regional Transportation System) buses to the game for free, if you have a valid ticket.

Hamilton Santa Claus Parade

The City of Hamilton is closing

  • Bay Street North between Cannon and King Streets West,
  • John Street South between King and Main Streets East,
  • King Streets East and West between John and Bay Streets,
  • Main Street East and West between John and Queen Streets South and
  • Queen Streets North and South between York Boulevard and Main Street West

on Saturday afternoon to accommodate the annual parade.

Burlington Transit, GO Transit and the Hamilton Street Railway are detouring buses during the event.

Burlington Transit
1 Fairview - Plains

Burlington Transit operates its buses on two different detours — before 1 p.m. and after 1 p.m.

On Saturday, November 14, from about 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., buses operating toward Hamilton proceed along their regular route.

Buses operating toward Burlington proceed along their regular route to King Street West and Bay Street, then detour:

westward along King West; and then
northward along Locke Street North to York Boulevard,
resuming their regular route northwestward along York.

Buses operating toward Burlington do not pick up passengers on Bay Street North between King and Cannon Streets West and Cannon West and York Boulevard between Bay and Locke Streets North.

From about 1 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, buses operating toward Hamilton proceed along their regular route to York Boulevard and Locke Street North, then detour:

southward along Locke Street North to King Street West,
ending their trips.

Buses operating toward Hamilton do not drop passengers off on York Boulevard between Locke and James Street, Wilson Street between James and Catharine Streets North, Catharine North between Wilson Street and King Street East and King Street East between Catharine and James Streets.

Buses operating toward Burlington start their trips at Locke Street North and King Street West, then proceed:

westward along King West; and then
northward along Dundurn Street North to York Boulevard,
resuming their regular route northwestward along York.

Buses operating toward Hamilton skip their regular stops along Main Street West at Poulette Street, Pearl, Hess, Caroline, Bay and MacNab Streets South.

Buses operating away from Hamilton start their trips at the the Hamilton GO Centre then proceed:

northward along John Street South;

From 6:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Christie and Dupont Streets, then detour:

westward along Dupont; and then
southward along Ossington Avenue to Ossington Station,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops on Christie Street south of Yarmouth Road, Essex Street and Barton Avenue and at Christie Station.

Northbound buses reverse the routing.

505 Dundas

From 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, eastbound cars operate along their regular route to Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue, then detour:

southward along Spadina;
eastward along Queen Streets West and East; and then
northward along Parliament Street to Dundas East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Dundas.

Until about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, passengers should expect delays at Ossington Avenue and Bloor Street West.

From 12:30 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, westbound buses operate along their regular route to The Esplanade and Lower Jarvis Street, then detour:

southward along Lower Jarvis;
westward along Lake Shore Boulevard East; and then
northward along Yonge Street to The Esplanade,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses skip their regular stops on The Esplanade west of Market Street, at Church Street and west of Scott Street, on Yonge Street at Front Street, on Bay Street south of Wellington Street West and on Front West west of Bay.

Eastbound buses start their trips on Yonge Street at The Esplanade, then proceed:

eastward along The Esplanade to Scott Street,
resuming their regular route eastward along The Esplanade.

eastward along Lake Shore Boulevard East; and then
northward along Lower Sherbourne Street to The Esplanade,
resuming their regular route northward along Sherbourne.

94 Wellesley

From 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, TTC buses operate along two routes.

Buses on the eastern route shuttle between Castle Frank and Wellesley Stations in both directions.

Eastbound buses on the western route start their trips at Ossington Station, then proceed:

northward along Concord Avenue;
eastward along Northumberland Street;
southward along Ossington Avenue;
westward along Harbord Street; and then
southward along Spadina Avenue to Spadina Crescent.

Westbound buses on the western route circle around Spadina Crescent and then proceed:

northward along Spadina Avenue;
westward along Harbord Street; and then
northward along Ossington Avenue,
ending their trips.

Passengers traveling on the western route should also expect delays at Ossington Avenue and Bloor Street West until about 2:30 p.m.

All eastbound buses skip their regular stops on Harbord Street at Huron and St. George Streets, on Hoskin Avenue at Wycliffe College and on Wellesley Street West at the Ontario Legislature building, east of Queen’s Park Crescent East, Bay and Yonge Streets.

All westbound buses skip their regular stops on Wellesley Street East at Yonge Street, on Wellesley West at Bay Street and Queen’s Park Crescent East, on Queen’s Park West at Hoskin Avenue, on Hoskin at Trinity College and St. George Street and on Harbord Street at Huron Street and Spadina Avenue.

1 Yonge - University - Spadina subway

Extra service throughout the day. Passengers should expect crowded conditions before and after the parade at King, Museum, Queen, Queen’s Park, St. George, St. Patrick, Spadina and Union Stations.
