GO Transit is looking how GO could upgrade rail infrastructure to expand rail service to the Niagara Region.
It will study possible sites for building new rail stations and layover facilities and how to improve current rail lines. GO starts an environmental assessment this week and hopes to finish by summer 2010. It will host the first open houses during the process to consult with members of the public in January.
Expanding rail service into the Niagara Peninsula depends on fleet requirements, capital and operating funds and supportive business partnerships with railways. GO’s strategic plan, GO 2020 (60 MB .pdf), outlined expanding rail service to Niagara as part of GO’s goal to serve the entire Greater Golden Horseshoe.
GO offered a successful weekend excursion train service this summer between Niagara Falls and Toronto from Saturday, June 27 until Thanksgiving, Monday, October 12. It also introduced year-round Monday-to-Friday and weekend bus service between Burlington and Niagara Falls on Saturday, September 5.
