Unofficial transit guide to the Olympic Torch Relay



The Olympic flame is lighting up Durham and York Regions.

Transit passengers should expect delays or detours as the Olympic Torch Relay to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games leaves Oshawa and then passes through Whitby, Ajax and Pickering in Durham Region, Stouffville, Markham, Richmond Hill and Thornhill in York Region on Thursday, December 17.


The Olympic Torch Relay affects these routes on December 17:

Ajax

After leaving Whitby, the torch arrives in Ajax by convoy.

As the torch passes through Ajax, the Region of Durham, the Durham Regional Police Service and the Town of Ajax will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Ajax at Bayly Street East, west of Salem Road South about 6:48 a.m., then proceeds:

westward along Bayly East;
southward along Burcher Drive;
westward along Clements Avenue East;
northward along Harwood Avenue South; and then
eastward along Achilles Road to Ajax Town Hall,
arriving at around 7:19 a.m.

The Olympic Torch Relay affects Durham Region Transit and GO Transit services in Ajax on December 17.

225 Audley North

From about 7 until 7:30 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Harwood Avenue South between Ajax Plaza and Station Street / Achilles Road.

222 Audley South

From about 6:30 until 7:30 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Bayly Street East between Salem Road North and Burcher Road

218 Beach

From about 6:30 until 7:30 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Bayly Street East between Salem Road North and Burcher Road, Burcher between Bayly East and Clements Road East and Harwood Avenue between Bayly East and Station Street / Achilles Road.

224 Harwood

From about 6:30 until 7:30 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Harwood Avenue South between Clements Road and Hunt Street.

916 Rossland

From about 7 until 7:30 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Harwood Avenue South between Hunt Street and Station Street / Achilles Road.

From about 7 until 7:30 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Harwood Avenue South between Hunt Street and Station Street / Achilles Road.

The Olympic Torch Relay also affects service along this route in Pickering, Oshawa and Whitby.

After leaving Ajax, the torch travels to Pickering by convoy.


Markham

After leaving Stouffville, the torch arrives in Markham by convoy.

As the torch passes through Markham, the Region of York, the York Regional Police and the Town of Markham will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Markham at Main Street North and Edward Jeffreys Avenue, then proceeds:

southward along Main North;
westward along Highway 7; and then
northward along Town Centre Boulevard to the Markham Civic Centre.

Markham celebrates the torch’s arrival in town at an event from 11:11 until 11:58 a.m., then the torch continues through Markham:

southward along Town Centre Boulevard; and then
westward along Highway 7 to Highway 404, the boundary with Richmond Hill, arriving at 12:26 p.m.

From about 9:45 until 10:15 a.m., south- and northbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Main Street North between Edward Jeffreys Avenue and Bullock Drive.

From about 10:15 until 10:45 a.m., south- and northbound passengers should also expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Highway 7 between Bullock Drive and Kennedy Road.

71 Uxbridge / Stouffville - Union

From about 9:45 until 10:15 a.m., south- and northbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Main Street North between Edward Jeffreys Avenue and Bullock Drive.

The Olympic Torch Relay also affects service along this route when it passes through Richmond Hill.

8 Kennedy

From about 10:30 until 11 a.m., south- and northbound passengers should expect delays as the torch passes along Highway 7 at Kennedy Road.

522 Markham community bus

From about 10 until 10:30 a.m., west- and eastbound passengers should expect detours and delays as the torch passes along Main Street North between Robinson Street and Highway 7 and along Highway 7 between Main Street Markham and Highway 404.

From about 10:30 until 10:45 a.m., west- and eastbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Highway 7 between Kennedy Road and Main Street Unionville.

41 Markham local

From about 10:15 until 10:45 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Highway 7 between McCowan Road and Markville Shopping Centre.

85 16th Avenue / Rutherford

From about 9:45 until 10:15, passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Main Street North at 16th Avenue.

40 Unionville local

From about 10:15 until 10:45 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Highway 7 between McCowan Road and Markville Shopping Centre.

Viva purple

From about 10 a.m. until 12:45 p.m., east- and westbound passengers should expect detours and delays as the torch passes along Highway 7 between Main Street and Valleymede Drive.

The Olympic Torch also affects service along this route when it passes through Richmond Hill.

After leaving Markham, the torch heads into Richmond Hill.


Oshawa

As the torch passes through Oshawa, the Region of Durham, the Durham Regional Police Service and the City of Oshawa will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey from City Hall at Queen and Bagot Streets around 5 a.m., then proceeds:

eastward along Bagot;
southward along Centre Street South;
eastward along John Street West;
northward along Simcoe Streets South and North;
westward along Bond and King Streets West to the boundary between Oshawa and Whitby,
arriving at about 5:28 a.m.

The Olympic Torch Relay does not affect Durham Region Transit services in Oshawa on December 17, however it does affect GO Transit services.

Durham Region Transit

The torch passes through Oshawa before DRT operates buses along any of the routes along the relay.

From about 5 until 5:30 a.m., westbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Bond and King Streets West between Simcoe Street and Stevenson Road.

Eastbound passengers should expect delays around 5 a.m. as the torch passes along Simcoe Street at King Street.

95 Oshawa - Finch via Highway 2 express

From about 5 until 5:30 a.m., westbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Simcoe along Bond and King Streets West between the Downtown Oshawa Terminal and the boundary between Oshawa and Whitby.

Eastbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along King Street West between Bond Street West and the boundary between Oshawa and Whitby.

They should also expect delays around 5 a.m. as the torch passes along Simcoe Street at King Street.

The Olympic Torch Relay also affects service along this route in Pickering and Whitby.

94 Oshawa - Yorkdale via Highway 2

From about 5 until 5:30 a.m., westbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Simcoe Streets South and North between John and Bond Streets and along Bond and King Streets West west of Simcoe Street.

Eastbound passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along King Street West west of Bond Street West.

They should also expect delays around 5 a.m. as the torch passes along Simcoe Street at King Street.

The Olympic Torch Relay also affects service along this route in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby.

After leaving Oshawa, the torch heads into Whitby.


Pickering

After leaving Ajax, the torch arrives in Pickering by convoy.

As the torch passes through Pickering, the Region of Durham, the Durham Regional Police Service and the City of Pickering will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Pickering on Brock Road South north of Highway 401 around 7:25 a.m., then proceeds:

northward along Brock Road South;
westward along Kingston Road;
southward along Valley Farm Road South;
westward along The Esplanade South;
northward along Glenanna Road;
westward along Kingston Road;
northward along Liverpool Road North; and then
westward along Finch Avenue to Fairport Road North,
arriving at around 8:44 a.m.

From about 8:15 until 9 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Liverpool Road North between Kingston and Glenanna Roads.

104 Glendale

From about 8:15 until 9 a.m., passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Liverpool Road North between Kingston Road and Finch Avenue and along Finch Avenue between Liverpool North and Bowler Drive.

Richmond Hill

After leaving Markham, the torch arrives in Richmond Hill.

As the torch passes through Richmond Hill, the Region of York, the York Regional Police and the Town of Richmond Hill will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Richmond Hill on Highway 7 at Highway 404 — the boundary with Markham — about 12:26 p.m., then proceeds:

westward along Highway 7;
northward along Valleymede Drive;
westward along Briggs and Bantry Avenues; and then
southward along Yonge Street to Highway 407,
arriving at 1:34 p.m.

After leaving Pickering, the torch arrives in Stouffville by convoy.

As the torch passes through Stouffville, the Region of York, the York Regional Police and the Town of Whitchurch - Stouffville will temporarily close and then re-open the street to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Stouffville on Main Street at the York-Durham Line about 9:04 a.m., then proceeds:

westward along Main Street to Highway 48,
arriving about 9:44 a.m.

As the torch passes through Thornhill, the Region of York, the York Regional Police, the City of Vaughan and the Town of Markham will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Thornhill on Yonge Street at Highway 407 around 1:34 p.m., then proceeds:

southward along Yonge Street to Morgan Avenue,
arriving at about 1:52 p.m.

From about 1:15 until 2:15, passengers should expect detours or delays as the torch passes along Yonge Street south of Bantry Avenue.

Whitby

After leaving Oshawa, the torch arrives in Whitby.

As the torch passes through Whitby, the Region of Durham, the Durham Regional Police Service and the Town of Whitby will temporarily close and then re-open streets to traffic to protect the safety of the torchbearers and their companions.

The torch starts its journey through Whitby on Dundas Street East at the boundary between Oshawa and Whitby around 5:28 a.m. It then proceeds:

westward along Dundas Street East;
northward along Anderson Street;
westward along Rossland Road East; and then
southward along Brock Streets North and South to Consumers Drive,
arriving at about 6:40 a.m.
