TTC made money in 2009 -- and attracts more riders

A nugget of good news about the TTC emerged this week, as the City of Toronto presented its 2010 operating budget and the Toronto Transit Commission met to discuss how to improve service to riders:

The TTC made money in 2009.

Just a few months ago, TTC staff forecasted that the agency would lose $23-million in 2009. That loss formed part of the $400-million shortfall that City staff projected for all City agencies, boards, commissions and departments (the “ABCs and Ds”) in 2010.

Instead, the TTC posted a modest $300,000 surplus.

And TTC ridership continues to increase, slightly. Despite the effects of the TTC raising fares in January, and a spate of bad publicity, during yesterday’s Commission meeting, staff revealed that the number of people riding the TTC in January 2010 had increased by about 1 percent from the number of passengers in January, 2009.
