Update — May 2, 4:22 p.m.: The City has canceled the work tonight because of inclement weather.

The City of Toronto is closing parts of the Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway overnight and on weekends throughout May, starting tomorrow, Sunday, May 2.

Passengers traveling on GO Transit buses operating to and from Union Station should expect detours, whenever the City has completely closed the expressway, or delays, whenever the City is only closing part of the Gardiner.

City contractors and staff will be resurfacing the roadway and restoring bridges from Sunday, May 2 until Sunday, May 23. The City is closing parts of the expressway to allow crews to work safely. It’s closing the road overnight or on weekends to reduce the impact on traffic, so that the work doesn’t disrupt so many commuters.

Gardiner Expressway construction dates:

A related project on Lake Shore Boulevard West won’t affect GO bus service, but may affect TTC service.

The construction mainly affects GO bus service to and from places west and northwest of Toronto — buses operating along these routes:

  • 16 Hamilton - Union via QEW express
  • 21 Milton / Mississauga - Union
  • 31 Guelph / Georgetown - Union

Also, late at night or early in the morning, work on the Gardiner also affects buses operating along the 18B / 18C Hamilton - Union routes. (Buses on these two routes mainly serve many Lakeshore West GO stations, when trains do not operate.)

On the weekend of May 15 to 17, the construction also affects GO bus service to and from places east, northeast and north of Toronto — buses operating along these routes:

  • 65 Newmarket - Union
  • 71 Uxbridge / Stouffville - Union

Also, late at night or early in the morning, on that weekend only, work on the Gardiner also affects buses operating along the 90C Newcastle - Union and 90B Oshawa - Union routes. (Buses on these two routes mainly serve many Lakeshore East GO stations, when trains do not operate.)

Although GO Transit control may direct drivers onto alternate routes, whenever traffic conditons warrant further detours, GO buses likely operate along the Queensway and Lake Shore Boulevard West to and from Union Station, if the City closes the Gardiner completely.
