York Region responds to less Metrolinx funding
by revising schedule for building Viva bus rapid transit lines



York Region has responded to the Metrolinx“5 in 10 “plan by proposing a new schedule for building its Viva bus rapid transit system.

The Region will receive $790 million from Metrolinx for projects that it will build over the next five years and $965 million for projects it will build between 2016 and 2020. The proposed plan extends vivaNext projects will be extended by five years from the original schedule.

York will use this funding to build rapidways - bus-only centre lanes for Viva vehicles.

Under the revised schedule, between 2010 and 2015, York will start to build rapidways along:

  • Yonge Street between from Highway 7 and Major Mackenzie Drive;
  • Yonge Street between Mulock Drive and Davis Drive;
  • Davis Drive between Yonge Street and Roxborough Road;
  • Highway 7 between Yonge Street and Warden Avenue; and
  • Highway 7 between Highway 400 and Creditstone Road.

Metrolinx has deferred funding for more rapidway segments, which the Region will build between 2016 and 2020:

  • Yonge Street between Major Mackenzie Drive and 19th Avenue;
  • Highway 7 between Creditstone Road and Yonge Street;
  • Highway 7 between Helen Street and Edgeley Boulevard; and
  • Enterprise Boulevard between Birchmount and Kennedy Roads.
