Decreasing the frequency of service along current routes

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along this route at other times of the day.

53 Steeles East

The TTC extends the route further into Morningside Heights. While extending the route improves service for Morningside Heights residents, it decreases the frequency of service for passengers traveling to and from stops along Steeles Avenue East east of Markham Road.

Starting Sunday, January 2, buses drop off and pick up these passengers every 27 minutes, instead of every 22 minutes Sunday-and-holiday mornings. The serve these stops every 28 minutes, instead of every 14 minutes afternoons, every 26 minutes, instead of every 12 minutes from about 7 until 10 p.m. and every 27 minutes, instead of every 16 minutes after 10 p.m.

196 York University rocket

Revising current routes

165 Weston Rd North
96 Wilson
319 Wilson overnight

Starting (officially), Sunday, January 2, the TTC responds to residents living on Wilson Heights Boulevard by revising the route of buses operating after 10 p.m. seven days a week. (The residents complained about the noise of the buses on their street.) Buses now enter and exit from the Wilson Station bus terminal along Transit Road and Wilson Avenue, instead of Wilson Heights late evenings and overnight.

(Unofficially, according to Steve Munro, the TTC actually revised the routes, starting Monday, October 25.)

196 York University rocket

Starting Monday, January 3, the TTC revises the route Monday-to-Friday midday and evenings. By changing the route, buses serve the local residential area south of the campus all day Mondays to Fridays, instead of only during rush hours.

Before noon, southbound buses operate from the Harry W. Arthurs Common on York University’s Keele Campus:

southward along Ian Macdonald Boulevard;
westward along The Pond Road;
southward along Sentinel Road; and then
eastward along Murray Ross Parkway to the north-south leg of the York University busway,
resuming their regular route eastward along Murray Ross.

Northbound buses operate along their current route.

After noon, northbound buses operate along their current route to Murray Ross Parkway and the north-south leg of the York University busway, then proceed:

westward along Murray Ross;
northward along Sentinel Road;
eastward along The Pond Road;
northward along Ian Macdonald Boulevard; and then
westward into the common.

Southbound buses operate along their current route.

Buses continue to operate in both directions along the north-south leg of the York University busway all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Buses serve these stops Mondays to Fridays only before noon:

  • on The Pond Road west of Ian Macdonald Boulevard,
  • on Sentinel Road south of The Pond and Cook Roads and
  • on Murray Ross Parkway east of Sentinel Road.

Buses serve these stops Mondays to Fridays only after noon:

  • on Murray Ross Parkway at Haynes Avenue and Sentinel Road,
  • on Sentinel Road at Cook and The Pond Roads;
  • on The Pond Road at Ian Macdonald Boulevard.

The TTC is also revising the route and increasing the hours> and decreasing the frequency of service at certain times of the week.

Extending current routes

53 Steeles East
53F Steeles East express (to Staines)

Starting Sunday, January 3, the TTC extends the routes further into the Morningside Heights community and operates buses along the longer route at all times seven days a week.

Westbound buses start their trips at Staines Road and Morningside Avenue, then proceed:

northward along Morningside;
eastward along Seasons Drive; and then
northward along Staines Road to the south branch of Quietbrook Crescent,
resuming their regular route northward along Stanines.

Eastbound buses operate along their current route to Staines Road and the north branch of Quietbrook Crescent, then proceed:

southward along Staines to Morningside Avenue,
ending their trips.

By extending the route, the TTC ends transit service around Quietbrook Crescent.

Buses operating along the 53F Finch East express branch operate to Staines Road Mondays to Fridays only during the rush hours and early evenings. Buses serving the 53E branch no longer operate early Monday-to-Friday evenings.

Buses operating along the 53A Finch East local branch operate into Morningside Heights at all other times of the week.

Buses operate into Morningside Heights every 27 minutes Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours, every 26 minutes from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., every 28½ minutes during the afternoon rush hours, every 21 minutes 20 seconds from about 7 until 10 p.m. and every 20 minutes after 10 p.m.

They operate into Morningside Heights every 27 minutes Saturday mornings and every 24 minutes Saturday afternoons. They operate every 22 minutes Sunday-and-holiday mornings and every 28 minutes Sunday-and-holiday afternoons.

Saturday, Sunday and holiday afternoons, the buses operate every 26 minutes from about 7 until 10 p.m. and every 27 minutes after 10 p.m.

TTC buses operating along three routes now serve Morningside Heights — 53 Steeles East, 116 Morningside and 133 Neilson.

You can see a map of all three routes — originally from a TTC staff report to the Toronto Transit Commission recommending the service — on Steve Munro’s website here. (.pdf) The map shows the complicated routing for transit services in the neighbourhood.

Although extending the route generally improves service for Morningside Heights, it also results in less frequent service along some parts of the route.

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along other parts of the route at certain times of the week.
