Peterborough Transit plans to decrease service

Toronto isn’t the only Southern Ontario city whose transit system proposes decreasing service to balance its operating budget.

Peterborough Transit plans to decrease weekend service on all routes, reduce rush-hour service along one route and eliminate Sunday service along another.

If Peterborough City Council approves the proposal, Peterborough Transit buses would only operate along all routes until 6:40 p.m., instead of 11:20 p.m., Saturdays and from 8:40 a.m. until 5:20 p.m., instead of from 8 a.m. until 7:20 p.m., Sundays.

It also wants to cut its Monday-to-Friday rush-hour service to Technology Drive from six daily trips to four and eliminate service along the 12 Major Bennett route all day Sundays.

Regular Transit Toronto reader Trevor Harris e-mailed us to let us know that many Peterborough Transit riders are unhappy about the service reductions. Some plan to speak at the upcoming Budget Committee meeting, when the committee reviews the 2011 transit budget. The committee meets this Tuesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber, Peterborough City Hall, 500 George Street North.
