Metrolinx approves plan to "electrify" some GO train lines

The Metrolinx board of directors today approved a plan to operate electric trains along GO Transit’s Georgetown and Lakeshore corridors in phases. However, the first electric GO trains would not be operating for at least nine years from now.

Metrolinx recently completed a year-long study which described the benefits of electrification. The benefits — including shorter travel times for passengers and lower operating costs — would increase over time.

The cost to “electrify” the two lines is between $1.6 and 1.8 billion.

The directors approved operating the electric trains first along the future Air Rail Link between Union Station and Pearson International Airport.
