Find out more about Highway 7 rapidway construction,
Open house, March 23

You can learn more about York Region’s plans to build rapidways — bus-only lanes in the centre of the road for Viva vehicles — along Highway 7 in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan.

In Markham, the Region just opened the new Enterprise rapidway, between Warden Avenue and Birchmount Road, earlier this month. Construction started along Highway 7 between Bayview Avenue and Highway 404 on Monday, February 28, as work crews installed temporary traffic signals. Starting Monday, March 21, crews will remove and relocate trees from areas between Bayview and Highway 404. They’re removing the trees to prepare for widening Highway 7. The Region plans to finish the rapidways from Yonge Street to Warden Avenue by 2014.

In Vaughan, the rapidways will eventually extend west from Yonge Street to Highway 50. The Region will build first part near the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, at the end of the Spadina subway extension. It intends to complete the rapidways from Highway 400 to Creditstone Road by 2015 and will build the parts from Creditstone Road to Yonge Street and from Helen Street to Edgeley Boulevard between 2016 and 2020.

The remaining segments of the Highway 7 rapidways in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan depend on funding from the municipal, regional, provincial and federal governments.

The Region is inviting you to drop by an open house on Wednesday, March 23 from 2 until 8 p.m. to learn more about what’s going on. Viva staff will make a presentation about their plans at 7 p.m. The event takes place in the Truffle Ballroom of the Delta Markham Hotel, 50 East Valhalla Drive (near Highways 7 and 404).
