Newmarket rapidway construction continues, March 21

York Region contractors continue to work on a project to build a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the middle of the roadway along Davis Drive East in Newmarket.

Starting tomorrow, Monday, March 21, they’ll start to build one-metre- (three-feet-) high retaining walls in front of 20, 54 and 350 Davis Drive East. They’ll also be grading and paving land in from of 180 Davis East, at Longford Drive. The work continues Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. for about six weeks.

The work includes:

  • setting up equipment on each site;
  • preparing the work area by clearing away plants and grass;
  • removing the asphalt and curb; and then
  • excavating the earth and then building the retaining wall.

Once workers have built the wall, they’ll restore the area and install a handrail on the top of the wall.

During the project, customers will have access to all businesses and, for the most part, workers will also keep sidewalks open for pedestrians. For the most part, the sidewalks will be kept open for pedestrians. However, you may face an occasional short-term pedestrian detour, when signs direct you to the north side of Davis Drive. From time to time, workers may also block traffic lanes, possibly delaying regular traffic and transit services.
