TTC now "essential"

Public transit is now an essential service in Toronto under a new Ontario law that prohibits employees of the TTC from going on strike.

The Government of Ontario passed the bill in the legislature today, Wednesday, March 31, by a vote of 68 to 9. Only New Democratic Party members voted against the measure.

Once Lieutenant-Governor David Onley signs the bill, it becomes law. Tomorrow, Thursday, March 31, some labour contracts with transit workers would have expired.

The new law puts TTC workers in the same category as police and firefighters for labour contracts. It includes a requirement for the government to review the essential service designation after five years.
