Weekend events affect transit services, April 2 and 3



Two local events — both involving maple syrup and both at the extreme edges of the area that this blog covers — affect transit services this weekend. The events take place in the Elmira community of Woolwich Township and in the Sunderland community of Brock Township.


The events affect these routes:

GO Transit81 Beaverton - Whitby.

Grand River Transit21 Elmira.


The Saturday, April 2 events affecting transit services are: the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival; and the Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival.

The Sunday, April 3 events affecting transit services are: the Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival.

Elmira


Elmira Maple Syrup Festival

The Region of Waterloo and Township of Woolwich are closing:

  • Arthur Street South (Regional Road 21) between Church Street and Memorial Avenue

on Saturday, April 2 from 1 a.m. until 8 p.m.

to accommodate the festival.

Grand River Transit is detouring buses during the event.

21 Elmira

Southbound buses operate along their regular route.

All day, Saturday, April 2, northbound buses operate along their regular route to Arthur Street South and First Street, then detour:

eastward along First Street East;
northward along Duke Street; and then
westward along Church Streets East and to Maple Street,
ending their trips.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Arthur Street South across from Brubacher Street, at Park Avenue East, Wyatt Street East and Mill Street.

Instead, northbound buses drop off and pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Duke Street at Baumann Street, Park Street East and Mill Street.

From 6 a.m. until noon, GRT is increasing the frequency of service by operating extra buses along the route to get visitors to and from the events.

To provide passengers faster service to the festival, GRT may reroute some of the extra northbound buses. The buses operate along their regular route to Sawmill Road and Regional Highway 85, then proceed:

eastward along Sawmill;
northward along New Jerusalem Road;
westward along Southfield Drive;
northward along Union Street; and then
westward along First Street to Duke Street,
resuming their detour route northward along Duke.

These buses skip their regular stops

  • on Regional Road 85 opposite Gerrat Drive and at Scotch Line Road and
  • on Arthur Street South north of Union Street and Earl Martin Drive, at Southfield Drive and north of Oriole Parkway.

To return passengers traveling from the festival more quickly, GRT may also reroute some of the extra southbound buses.

These southbound buses operate along their regular route to Arthur Street South at Listowel Road, then proceed:

westward along Listowel (Regional Road 85);
southward along Three Bridges Road;
eastward along Hawkesville Road / Main Street St. Jacobs (Regional Road 17);
northward along Northside Drive; and then
eastward along Sawmill Road to King Street North,
resuming their regular route southward along King North.

These southbound buses skip the regular stops

  • on Regional Road 85 across from Scotch Line Road and at Gerrat Drive and
  • on Sawmill Road across from and west of Parkside Drive.

Sunderland


Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival

The Region of Durham and the Township of Brock are closing

  • River Street Sunderland (Regional Road 10)

this weekend to accommodate the 15th annual festival.

GO Transit is detouring buses during the event.

81 Beaverton - Whitby

(GO has not confirmed this detour. This post describes how it detoured buses in 2010 during the event.)

On Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Highway 12 and River Street, then detour:

southward along Highway 12;
northward along Albert Street South to Sunderland Elementary School,
turning around through the school driveway; and then
southward along Albert to Highway 12,
resuming their regular route southward along Highway 12.

Northbound buses operate along their regular route to Highway 12 and Albert Street South, then detour:

northward along Albert Street South to Sunderland Elementary School,
turning around through the school driveway; then
southward along Albert; and then
northward along Highway 12 to River Street,
resuming their regular route northward along Highway 12.
