raise fares, July 1



You’ll be paying more to ride the bus in Oakville, Niagara Falls and Waterloo Region, starting Canada Day, Friday, July 1.

Niagara Falls

The cost of adult cash fares increases by 15 cents to $2.50.

Niagara Falls Transit is also raising the cost of cash fares for seniors — adults 65 years of age or older — and students — children in elementary and secondary school between 13 and 19 years of age — by 15 cents to $2.25. Fares for children less than 13 years of age increases by 15 cents to $1.25 The cost to buy passes is also going up — to $70 for a monthly adult pass. Niagara Falls Transit’s also changing the cost of other fare categories.

Oakville

Oakville Transit is keeping the cash fare the same in 2011 as it was in 2010, but, starting July 1, it’s increasing the cost of tickets and passes. The cost to buy a monthly adult pass increases by $7 from $88 to $95, while the cost for students passes increases by $6 from $68 to $74. Seniors passes remain at the same cost as in 2010 — $50. You can buy 10 adult tickets for $26.50 — $1 more than in 2010, while the cost for 10 student tickets also increases by $1 to $22. The price of ten seniors tickets goes up by 50 cents to $18.

Waterloo Region

You’ll have to pay an extra 15 cents to buy adult Grand River Transit bus tickets, starting July 1. Adult tickets will cost $1.95 each. The cash fare for adults, however, remains at $2.50.

Waterloo Region Council approved raising GRT fares at its meeting Tuesday, May 5.

Council expects to approve five-to-ten percent fare increases every year for the next several years as it asks Waterloo Region passengers to help pay for more bus services and rapid transit. Increasing fares by 15 cents raises about $900,000 for GRT services.

GRT is also increasing the cost of a monthly student pass from $44 to $46.
