YRT distributes PRESTO cards to passengers,
September 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

Updated — Tuesday, September 20, 7:43 a.m.: Thanks for Gilbert Vesleño for pointing out an ambiguity in this post. We’ve added information to clarify that you have to pay for the cards that YRT is handing out — they’re not free!

York Region Transit staff continue to distribute PRESTO fare cards to passengers this week. YRT is also waiving the usual $6 fee to issue the cards this week and staff are updating riders on how to use the smart cards and the PRESTO website and show you how to register your cards.

They’ll be distributing the cards at the Richmond Hill Centre Terminal today, Monday, September 19, from 2:30 until 6:30 p.m. They’ll also be at the York University Terminal tomorrow, Tuesday, September 20 from 1 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. and take part in York Fest on the Campus Walk at York University’s Keele Campus Wednesday, September 21 from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

They’ll be handing out the cards Thursday, September 22 from 3 until 6:30 p.m. and Friday, September 23 from 1 until 6:30 p.m. at Richmond Hill Centre Terminal.

You can buy the cards for $19 during the event, but YRT is loading the cards with a value of $25, including the $6 issuance fee and $19 you can use to pay fares.

If you don’t register your card at the event, you must pay the full $25. If you do register your card, you’ll have 24 hours to activate the card by using it.

If you miss the event, you can buy and register PRESTO cards at the YRT head office at 50 High Tech Road, 5th floor, Richmond Hill Mondays to Fridays during business hours.

You can learn more about using PRESTO cards on YRT and Viva buses here.
